A proud tradition deserves a worthy heir.

Over 55 years, MINI has etched its name into the annals of motor sport history on circuits and stages spanning the globe.

From the gruelling off-road ordeal which is the Dakar Rally to Australia’s own Mount Panorama, MINI has defied its size and reinforced its reputation for incisive handling and performance by meeting chequered flags ahead of scores of rivals.

The new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch builds on the marque’s proud racing heritage to deliver an engaging driving experience  worthy of its badge and boasts more power and greater efficiency than its predecessor.

Available from $47,400 in manual guise, or $49,950 with a sports automatic transmission, the new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch fuses sporting substance with style and charisma.

The new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch possesses significantly improved standard specification over its predecessor, with a host of driving, technology and safety innovations included in stock form.

MINI Australia General Manager Kai Bruesewitz expressed his excitement at the arrival of the variant, which stands at the summit of the brand’s product range.

“The new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch provides a flagship model to lead the new MINI line-up, which has recently seen the arrival of the MINI 5-Door to complement the new MINI 3-Door Hatch,” Bruesewitz said.

“There’s no doubt any MINI has the ability to deliver a smile-inducing driving experience, but the MINI JCW will turn that smile into a wide grin.

“The MINI JCW is loyal to its past racing heritage, but also looks to the future with innovative technology and dynamics.  Its accessible pricing means it will appeal to a wide range of customers including passionate MINI fans and committed performance drivers.”

MINI John Cooper Works GayCarBoys (3)Boasting the most powerful engine ever featured in a model hailing from Oxford, the new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch features the latest generation MINI TwinPower Turbo power unit, producing 170 kW, while generating up to 320 Nm of torque.

With peak torque available from 1250 rpm, extracting optimum performance from the halo sports variant will certainly not prove an elusive exercise, providing the kind of visceral, adrenaline inducing thrill keenly sought by motoring enthusiasts.

Developed on the platform of the four-cylinder plant featured in the latest generation MINI Cooper S, the new engine includes exhaust manifold integrated turbo-charging, direct injection, fully variable valve control and variable camshaft control on the intake and exhaust sides.

The advancements conspire to deliver engine output far in excess of the new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch’s forbearer, leaving the previous iteration of the performance car in its wake with a 10 per cent boost in power, and 23 per cent increase in maximum torque.

The substantial uplift reinforces the new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch’ performance credentials, which are further emphasised by impressive acceleration figures, surging from 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds when paired with the standard manual transmission, or 6.1 seconds when allied to an optional six-speed Steptronic sports transmission.

Rolling acceleration meanwhile has improved markedly, racing ahead from 80 km/h to 120 km/h in 5.6 seconds; the 10 per cent increase in elasticity a firm demonstration of its track-inspired, and race ready athleticism.

The symphonic, resonant soundtrack emanating from the new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch Hatch is made possible by a specific sports exhaust system, underscoring its performance while also facilitating spontaneous power delivery.

Such exalted performance however doesn’t come at the expense of efficiency, which is further refined in this latest iteration of the British premium brand’s performance flagship.

The new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch Hatch records average fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures in the EU test cycle of 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres, and 155 grams per kilometre, which improve further when paired with the optional sports automatic transmission.

Indeed, the six-speed Steptronic gearbox is almost 20 per cent more efficient than its predecessor model, consuming fuel at a rate of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres and emitting 133 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

Newly developed for the latest model generation, the six-speed manual transmission incorporates a gear sensor enabling active engine speed adaptation, automatically adjusting the engine speed to the rotational speed of the input shaft for the gear selected, ensuring silky clutch engagement.

The degree of innovation is further pronounced with the six-speed Steptronic sports transmission, prioritising swift gear shifting while still optimising efficiency.

Precision, balance and handling, trademarks for which MINI is renowned, assume added significance in the launch of the automaker’s latest track-ready performance car, where its ambition to deliver a driving experience inspired by its storied past takes prominence.

With a low centre of gravity, enabled by short overhangs, wide track and rigid body structure, and extensively refined suspension, fastidiously tailored engineering buttresses the new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch’ sporting ambitions.

Fitted with Dynamic Damper Control suspension as standard, including an electronically controlled SportMINI John Cooper Works GayCarBoys (4)s setting, the track-inspired and capable small car benefits from a single-joint spring strut front axle, and a multilink rear axle, providing increased stiffness at reduced weight.

With Dynamic Damper Control, drivers can specify desired driving characteristics to adapt the ride and vehicle response to their ambitions.

A fixed permanent Sports Suspension setting is also available, providing harder springs and stiffer gas shock absorbers, maximising road contact, even when driven with intent.

Designed in collaboration with renowned independent manufacturer Brembo, the new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch is equipped with a high-performance brake system developed exclusively for this model.

Precisely harmonised with the properties of the MINI John Cooper Works, the fixed calliper disc brakes guarantee a consistently impressive deceleration performance, even when exposed to intensive stress on the race track.

Mitigating against the potential for self-steering, a Torque Steer Compensation function finesses the delivery of drive through the front wheels, while Dynamic Stability Control, comprising Dynamic traction Control and Electronic Differential Lock Control supports vehicle agility when tackling bends at speed.

The new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch’ superiority over its predecessor isn’t exclusively restricted to performance, with significantly enhanced standard specification providing compelling value for a vehicle capable of transitioning from the road to the track.

Two-tone, 18-inch John Cooper Works Cup spoke wheels provide visual cues of the new vehicle’s racing intentions and sporting heritage, as Chili Red and Rebel Green make their debut on the Hatch.

Model specific sports seats with Dinamica and Cloth upholstery characterise the interior which is accented by a black chequered trim in standard specification.

Technological and safety innovations also come to the fore with reversing camera, Head Up Display, featuring model specific content, including gear indicator, rev display and shift lights, Park Assist with front and rear Park Distance Control, DAB+ tuner and Professional Navigation included across the range.

The features of the MINI navigation system Professional include an 8.8-inch version of the on-board computer and the MINI Touch Controller with touch-sensitive surface.

LED headlights, extended Bluetooth with armrest, and MINI Driving Modes, which can influence the characteristic curves of the accelerator, steering and engine acoustics in MID, SPORT and GREEN modes, round out the standard options.

All current MINI vehicles have a service scheduling system called Condition Based Service (CBS) which identifies the condition of a vehicle based on actual use, realising the full potential of a vehicle and minimising costs.

Under the CBS system, sensors and advanced algorithms monitor and calculate the conditions in which the vehicle is used including mileage, time elapsed since the last service, fuel consumption and how the vehicle is driven.  The information captured is used to determine the vehicle’s maintenance requirements, indentifying that either an annual vehicle inspection or an oil service is due.

In addition, MINI service and selected maintenance costs can now be covered by a single, one-off advance payment with MINI TLC. TLC offers two packages; MINI TLC Basic Service Inclusive Basic provides scheduled servicing cover, while MINI TLC Plus combines scheduled servicing and selected maintenance items. For just $980, the MINI TLC Basic package takes care of scheduled servicing costs for five years or 70,000 kms, whichever comes first. The MINI TLC plan provides a long-term solution enabling cover to be extended and transferred to future vehicles owners before expiry.
