VW Touareg Video Review

Touareg Streaks ahead of the pack:

I was excited at the thought of spending a week covering 2,500km in a new Touareg.

By now you’ll have read a million reviews and I’m sad to say that I must be the last journalist in the country to drive one.

The old model was great, but was aging. It hardly measured up to the competition because the handsome looks had been around for ages, the technology came out with the Ark. VW knew this and in a single bound, leap-frogged the others to leave the opposition in a pile of steaming dung.

What’s New?

The engine and tranny are used in Amarok, but the rest is new and gorgeous.

The Outside has just the right amount of class, butch, and sparkle. The body is as sexy as hell, and the lighting arrays perform shows Livid would be proud of.

An electric foot operated hatch swings up so a capacious, easy access, boot space can be loaded. If it’s too high, you can press a button in the cargo hold to raise or lower the height of the car. It squats on the air suspension which can also vary the height while driving. Very handy, especially off-road.

20” Braga Alloys look fabulous but off-roading my be a challenge in anything but mud and sand. A taller tyre might be best suited to rocky terrain.

Why is Touareg good value?

Even at over $100,000 on the road, Touareg stepped way ahead of the opposition with driveability and technology being vastly superior.

Also superior is the $8,000 cabin option giving the interior 2 huge screens, 1 in front of the driver and another in the centre stack. It also adds an HUD (heads up display) projecting data onto the windscreen. You can split the information in to zones which is handy on a roadtrip.

Front seats are heated, cooled, and have a massage function.

The cargo hold has buttons to raise or low suspension to making loading easier. The rear hatch has a kick-to-open function.

Pressing and holding the lock button on the fob winds up any open windows (and sunroof if fitted), but you can leave that key in your pocket. It also works by pressing and holding the indentation on the door handles outside.

Engine and Transmission

The V6 turobo diesel is mated to a smooth 8 speed ZF automatic. VW says the DCT automatics couldn’t handle the torque from this giant of an engine. It puts power to the road through all four wheels (AWD) with VW’s 4Motion system which shuffles power as needed.

For those who fancy getting down and dirty, Touareg can do a little off-roading, but would you want to sctratch up you shiny new ca? I think not. Instead, crack a champers and let others get mucky while you watch them, perched on your tailgate in the dry.

See part 2 for the road trip and Kurt McGuiness tooling about in a hilside, racing a couple of millenials on bikes. In a scene straight from a well-known TV show, Kurt throws the big SUV about like a toy. Who knew Kurt was such a ham?

Our road trip saw the VW getting as low as 5.0L/100k and got from Sydney to Brisbane with 150k to spare. A car the size of a small moon getting that sort of fuel economy was once only a dream.

Uses

Chuck on a pair of Paris Hilton sunglasses, and you’re an Eastern Suburbs Mum, repleat with screaming kids. But, wouldn’t you rather think of yourself as a hairy chested jet skier? I know I certainly would.

Touareg is everyday transport that doubles as anything you want on the weekend.

We sent Rob on the launch. Here is his review.
