The all-new Astra has scooped one Europe’s top motoring awards overnight in Berlin, the 2015 Golden Steering Wheel in the compact class.

The ‘Golden Steering Wheel’ is awarded by two of Europe’s biggest and most respected automotive media outlets; Auto Bild and Bild am Sonntag.  Tested and reviewed by a hardened jury of readers, experts and celebrities in a number of extensive drive sessions, Astra was put through its paces before being crowned the victor.

The all-new Astra, which Holden will launch in Australia in late 2016, fended off tough competition from other newcomers to the compact class crown thanks to a completely new lightweight vehicle architecture, cutting edge engines and a range of state-of-the-art features borrowed from the luxury class.

Opel Group CEO, Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, accepted the award on behalf of Opel and said this Astra is the best vehicle Opel have ever built.Astra and Karl Thomas Neumann with Golden Steering Wheel award gaycarboys (1)

“The (Golden Steering Wheel) most important award for the best Opel we have ever built!  And the most important car in our product portfolio. We at Opel can be extremely proud of this ‘Golden Steering Wheel’. It proves that all of our efforts have paid off,” said Dr. Neumann.

“The all-new Astra is synonymous for lightweight, highly efficient engines, better packaging, features from the luxury class, trendsetting connectivity and exemplary quality.”

Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Bernhard said the Golden Steering Wheel award confirmed what we already believe, that the all-new Astra was an exceptional car.

“The all-new Astra is a car that promises to shake up the small car segment while clearly highlighting Holden’s commitment to bringing in the best cars from around the GM world for our customers,” said Mr. Bernhard.

“Astra is designed on a completely new lightweight vehicle architecture, powered by latest-generation engines and with Holden engineers’ input right from the start, you can be sure it will be perfect for Australian roads.”

“Astra is also one of the most technologically advanced cars around.  In addition to an intuitive infotainment system, it also boasts groundbreaking personal connectivity and a range of premium features.

“We cannot wait to introduce this car to Australia next year.”
