2020 Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary

Maybe it is the bogan in me that loves a Nissan GT-R, but every time I get in to one, I don’t want to get out.

Generations of fellow bogans have made their marks on the world by doing the same. 50 Years of Nissan have worn the badge, starting with the Cedric-looking coupe, to the 240K model, then the Skylines which gained near god-like status. GT-R has always been a serious business.

There are currently 3 models: Premium, Premium Luxury, and Track Edition. Our 50th is based on the Premium Luxury, with a $9,000 price above the model on which it is based.

What’s new with the 50th Anniversary Model?

In short, lots of badges, and a nicer cabin.

The body get a new blue heritage colour as one of the choices. There are 2 other colours: Peral white (red stripes) and Silver (white stripes). White racing stripes are set against our Bayside Blue car, and bespoke RAYS 20” alloy wheels have branch-like spoke with blue highlights. The racing livery is inspired by the 1971 Japan Grand Prix.

The stunning-looking titanium quad exhausts have a matching blue tint, and there are badges front, back, and side, as well as on the door sills.

Inside:

2020 range changes combine with 50th anniversary additions to give the cabin a touch of well-deserved luxury. The two-tone effect includes shade of grey. Twilight Grey looks restful and luxurious and is a welcome change to black on black with just a touch of black.

Semi-aniline leather in grey, is stitched in white. Additional leather is added to doors, gear knob, and steering wheel. The dash gets a special mention with even more stitched leather. It is all soft and buttery, and beautiful to see and touch.

There are 50th badges, as well as a shedload of sexy carbon fibre trim.

There are back seats, sort of, but with front seats set for normal operation, there is zero legroom in the rear. Best leave those for parcels.

What is the GT-R like to drive?

GT-R keeps the proven twin turbo V6 with 419kw and 632Nm running on 98ron premium fuel. The ATTESA E-TS All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) has a patented independent rear-mounted transaxle. It integrates transmission, differential and AWD transfer case.

The 6 speed dual clutch automatic has rev matching in manual mode. Manual mode can be selected by shifting the gear lever sideways, or by using the steering wheel paddles. It won’t go back to full automatic mode until commanded by again using the gear lever, or by holding the “up” paddle.

Hill start assist is standard.

Braking uses floating two-piece rotors with diamond pattern ventilation for cooling. They are 390mm at the front and 380mm around the back. Monoblock calipers are Super-rigid 6-piston in the front, and 4-piston at the rear.

Bilstein® DampTronic® Suspension allows driver-selected modes for greater user control. Double-wishbone front suspension with aluminium arms, and Multi-link rear suspension with aluminium upper arms, make bit ride and handling more subtle than you would expect. The experience is enhanced by Hollow front and rear stabiliser bars.

There are towing hooks under the front passenger floor where you could also store a can of repair goo, just in case the run-flat tyres don’t run flat.

There are exclusively developed tyres:

  • nitrogen-filled at factory
  • 255/40ZRF20 (front)
  • 285/35ZRF20 (rear)
  • Dunlop® SP SPORT MAXX GT600 DSST CTT high performance run-flat tyres.

Steering is near psychic. Yaw inputs are monitored by the system which then fettles the car mid corner. The result is dynamic handling worthy of a racetrack.

Unusually for high-performance cars, it is equally at home around town and on the highway.
