2020 Genesis G70 Ultimate Sport

The Genesis marque is a luxury spinoff from the main Hyundai range, and G70 is the premium performance model of the entry level Genesis range.

It is a sister car to Kia’s Stinger, and shares much of the barn-storming DNA.

There are 6 models, with 2 engines, and an 8-speed automatic putting the power down to the back wheels.

Outside:

The look can only be described as villainously-stunning. It is evil, and menacing. Something deep inside me wants to see one in matte black, with blacked out windows, jet black wheels and blood-red Brembos.

The sexy sports saloon 4684mm sits low on 19” wheels. It is just 1400mm high, and 1850mm wide, with a 2835mm wheelbase.

There are 9 tasteful colours, none of which are matte black. They include exotic names like: Himalayan Grey Metallic, Mallorca Blue Metallic, Havana Red Metallic, and Serengeti Brown. They take you on a Contiki tour, without the head-splitting hangover.

Some models have Brembo brakes in either red, or matte silver to add a touch of track cred.

Lighting is LED which swivel in the top models. The luscious grille has a complex wire-look mesh, and the pert rump has an unbuilt spoiler, topped off the dual chrome exhausts.

In profile, the coupe styling is deeply sculptured with a strong line arching gracefully upwards and over the muscular rear aches. Chrome highlights on door handles, windows, and vents, add the finishing touch of fine jewellery the perfect outfit.

Inside:

If the exterior is gorgeous, then the cabin can only be described as magnificent.

Supple quilted leather, stitched in red, compliments muted matte silver aluminium. The centre stack is slanted ever so slightly toward the driver, cockpit style.

There are no nasty shiny surfaces to reflect the afternoon sun like a Bond weapon.

Driver instruments include a 7” display set between large conventional gauges. This is augmented by a heads up display beaming data right on to the windscreen in front of the driver’s eyes.

Space in the rear is snug with a taller driver up front. Front seats are heated and cooled, and the outer rear seats are heated. That is something you can’t find in a BMW without selling your left arm.

Overhead is a soft liner which adds to cabin noise damping.

The centre stack is crowned by an 8” LCD touch panel where vehicle settings can be lovingly fettled.

The Drive:

Rack mounted electric steering feels sharp.

Genesis developmed G70 in such exotic places as Namyang, Nürburgring, Death Valley, and Arjeplog in Sweden. But that wasn’t good enough for canny OZ buyers, oh no. Genesis was jostled and jolted, and run across roads fit only for cattle.

Near psychic turns can be had with the flick of a twist, the deft changes in direction being near psychic. Ride is good, tending to be a little firm even in comfort mode. Drive modes allow a certain amount of leeway to set suspension, steering, and throttle just so.

We set off for a tasty light lunch in historic Picton, in the rolling hills south of Sydney. The George IV hotel is the centre of the sleepy village and has bags of atmosphere.

The countryside provides not only a bucolic backdrop, but many twisting ribbons of tarmac’d treasures.

Fuel economy hovered around 10L/100k but that dropped to below 8L/100k on the open road. The 8-speed automatic disconnects when coasting, allowing the 3.3 V6 to drop back to idle. If you try out the launch control, you’ll blaze a trail to 100 in just 4.7 seconds. It will vaporize your fuel figures, but that is a small price to pay.

Even on a very hot day, the cabin was an oasis. Seat heating and cooling made the experience even more splendid.

There is more than a touch of “private jet” to the design.

If you’re expecting the remnants of a crappy 30year old Excel to lay in wait, you’re in for a shock. G70 feels and looks dead posh.
