Records were set for number plates and classic cars at Shannons timed online Autumn Auction from April 13-20, which achieved a spectacular $7.9 million outcome.

All 25 New South Wales and Victorian numerical number plates sold, with record prices achieved for two, three, four and five-digit lots.

The top price was $830,000 for the Victorian plate ’96’, with a fierce late bidding duel driving its price up by more than $100,000.
Massive results were also posted for US Classics and Australian Muscle Cars, with a restored and well-travelled left hand drive 1967 Shelby Mustang GT350 Fastback bringing $350,000, a super-rare, hand-built 1976 Stutz Blackhawk Coupe selling for $146,500, while amongst the locals, a restored 1970 four-speed manual Ford XW GT Falcon went on estimate for $162,500 and a low kilometre 2017 HSV Commodore GTS-R brought $153,000.
However, the standout result was the $120,000 paid for an outstanding, trophy-winning, single family owned 1965 Holden HD X2 Premier Sedan – double its high estimate – after 57 bids.
Classic Japanese sporting cars expectedly were highly sought-after, with $125,000 paid for a 2002 limited edition Mazda RX7 Spirit R Coupe; $55,500 achieved by a 1987 Nissan Skyline GTS-R HR31 Coupe ‘homologation special’ and $38,000 given for a very rare 1967 Toyota Corona 1600 GT5 Coupe.
Stately Rolls-Royce models were popular with bidders, led by a beautiful 1932 20/25 ‘Thrupp & Maberly’ bodied Saloon selling for $95,501, while a 1987 Silver Spirit Saloon went for $40,000 and a 1966 Silver Shadow made $36,500.
Other notable Classic vehicle results included:
- a restored, Ford-engined 1967 Jeep M151V2 sold for $45,000 after a late bidding surge;
- a restored 1957 MGA Mark I 1500 Roadster sold after sustained bidding for $48,000;
- a superb left-hand-drive 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS 396 Convertible sold for $86,000;
- a 1973 BMW 3.0CS Automatic coupe made an impressive $135,000;
- a fully-restored 1968 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series 2+2 Coupe brought an excellent $221,000.
Amongst the motorcycles, the clear standout was a restored 1954 Norton Manx 500cc solo with a local and overseas race history that brought $48,000, while a very rare c1933 Rudge 500 TT Replica sold for $18,750 and an amazing 1923 Indian Standard Power Plus Outfit with its original sidecar was purchased in project condition for $19,551.
The New South Wales and Victorian numerical number plates attracted great bidder interest, with the ‘Porsche’ model type number VIC ‘992’ selling for an unprecedented $286,500 after a late duel between two determined bidders, while the other famous Porsche racing number NSW ‘917’ went for $250,000; VIC ‘1.688’ was the top-selling four-digit plate at $200,500 and the NSW plate ‘71717’ produced the best five-digit outcome at $120,500.
The ‘birthday plates VIC ‘1997’ was popular at $132,000, as was VIC ‘2009’ at $115.500.
