Volkswagen has secured a steady supply of its much-awaited Mark 8 Golf R hatchback and Wagon, while cutting a grand off the recommended retail price.

The new Golf R arrives in April, but the semiconductor shortage means some of the new cars will not have the standard Harman Kardon sound system.

To get around this, VGA has reduced the price of the Golf R hatchback and Wagon by $1000 by making this sound system one of only two Golf R options.

Pricing is now $65,990; and $68,990 for the Golf R Wagon.

Brand Director of Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles Michal Szaniecki said: “With more than 7000 expressions of interest in the new R range and in excess of 1000 deposits, our foremost intention is to meet rapidly growing customer demand.”

“Initially both versions of the Golf R will be offered at the revised RRP without Harmon Kardon, and with this sound system at $66,990 for the hatchback and $69,990 for the Wagon. This and the choice of a sunroof are the only two options on the Mark 8 Golf R.”

The Golf R hatchback and the Wagon come with the standard IQ Drive active and passive safety package, as well as torque vectoring, drift mode and R driving profiles.

The Golf R hatchback power is 235kW/400Nm from the 2.0 litre turbo petrol. 4MOTION all-wheel-drive has been finessed and puts down the power through a seven speed DSG transmission. 0- 100kh/h is dispatched in 4.8 seconds.

The Golf R Wagon has slightly more torque 235kW/420Nm for a 0-100 of 4.9 seconds.
