Tesla Cameras System

Autonomous driving is not far away, all new tesla vehicles come with cameras capable of providing Autopilot features today, and full self-driving capabilities in the future, it’s just a  software update away.

How Many Cameras Does a Tesla Have? 

All new Tesla’s come fitted with eight cameras positioned around the exterior of the vehicles providing 360 degrees visibility around the vehicle to a 250m range. Twelve ultrasonic sensors compliment the vision enabling detection of both hard and soft at close to double the old range. 

If that’s not enough to make you feel safe  an ultrasonic forward facing radar system provides additional data about the environment, it is able to see through rain and fog, dust and even the car ahead.

Rear view cameras have a max distance of 50m, Rearward Looking Side Cameras 100m, Wide Forward Camera 60m, Ultrasonics have an 8m range, Forward Looking Side Cameras 80m, Narrow Forward Camera 250m and the max radar distance is 180m.

To process all this additional data new on-board computers have been upgraded to over 40x the processing power of previous models which run Tesla’s neural net for vision, sonar and radar processing software.

Ultimately the Tesla system provides simultaneous 360 degree vision of the driving environment unachievable by a human and on wavelengths that go far beyond the human senses. I don’t know about you but that makes me feel safer on the road. Tesla’s system is built on deep neural networks, deconstructing the driving environment at greater levels of reliability than those achievable with classical vision processing techniques.

What Role Do Cameras Play in Tesla’s Level of Autonomy?

Autopilot advanced safety and convenience features are designed to assist you with the most cumbersome parts of driving, enabling the vehicle to steer, accelerate and brake in its lane. Current autopilot features do require driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. With the new Tesla Vision cameras and sensors and processing power, your Tesla will navigate tighter, more complex roads with ease.

The Tesla camera data also enable navigate features that suggest lane changes to optimise your route, and makes adjustments so you don’t get stuck behind slow cars or trucks. In addition, navigate on Autopilot will automatically steer your car toward exits based on your destination.

With all these cameras the Tesla has an auto summon feature, no more finding your car in car-parks. With Smart Summon, your car will navigate complex environments and parking spaces, manoeuvring around objects as necessary to come find you in a car-park.

All new Tesla vehicles have the hardware and cameras needed in the future for full self-driving in almost all circumstances, eventually we will just get in and tell the car where to go. If you don’t tell the Tesla where to go it will look up your calendar and take you to an assumed destination. Tesla will calculate the optimal route, navigate streets (even without lane markings!), it is able to manage complex intersections with traffic lights, roundabouts and stop signs, and handle densely populated freeways with cars travelling at high speeds.

Tesla Park Seek Mode 

When you arrive, just jump out at the entrance and your car will enter park seek mode, automatically search for a spot and park itself. A simple tap on your phone when your done at your location summons your Tesla back to you. More pure brilliance from the Tesla camera systems for that horrific Christmas parking nightmare, in fact who ever wants to navigate parking. 

The Future of Autonomous Driving 

The future use of Tesla camera based features without human supervision is totally dependent on achieving reliability far in excess of human drivers. This will be based on billions of kilometres of experience and regulatory approvals. This could take some time based on different regulatory environments. As each camera feature is approved for use your vehicles software will be automatically updated.
