We all know it don’t we?

How many times have you got a nice tidy discount off a cute gay salesman? We call it a “family discount”. Who hasn’t walked off a plane with a few takeaways the friendly trolly dolly tucked under your arm?

Do your homework.

Jump on the interwebz and research.

Remember, the price on the ad is just the starting point. There is often room to move, especially if you have a trade-in. Rather than discount your purchase, the dealer will offer more on your trade.

Have 3 or 4 models in mind, and this works whether new or used cars are on your list.

What do I say?

It’s worth finding a gay salesman and asking him for a discount. Be brave, don’t be afraid. What’s the worst thing that can happen? He could say no, but that is unlikely.

I bought a car for a friend and got a few gorgeous little things thrown in: a full tank of fuel, an upgraded audio system, free floor mats, and a nice discount. It all adds up. It was about $5,000 in all.

Why pay more for something when you don’t have to?

Smile, be friendly, and above all be clear about what you want. Ask him if there is anything he can toss on for you, but make sure it’s useful.

Ladies, you’re not left out either. The gay salesman won’t be saying something like, “and when will your husband or father be coming down,” oh no. Be honest, just tell him what you want. There is nothing a gay man likes more than helping a lady.

Budget.

Have your money ready to roll. They’ll probably have a finance offer, and it could be a good one. Even if the interest rate is low, make sure you do your sums.

Don’t be tempted to tick more options boxes than you have to.

The best time to shop.

Like most industries, the end of the month makes sales staff more malleable. They’ll turn into a gymnast if it means a few extra shekels in their bonus.

End of financial year is even better.

Watch out for factory discounts. This makes a sale even more attractive. It means the big discount comes from the manufacturer, not the dealer. That doesn’t mean you can’t ask for a couple of sweeteners.

The car industry is having a hard time.

The country is having a bad time just now and the car industry sales have been down. That is the perfect time to properly incentivise a sale.

If you have a friend who is also buying, even better. Ask for a bulk family discount.

See, that wasn’t hard was it.

Treat your sales person as a friend, not an adversary, but, be firm.

The old saying is if you don’t ask you don’t get. Make sure you GET.
