Subaru has unveiled a stunning WRX concept car at the New York International Auto Show.

Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), the maker of Subaru vehicles, says the lower, wider, WRX concept hints at the design language of the next generation WRX.

The front design emphasizes the aggressive stance of WRX, together with solidity and stability.

A prominent classic Subaru hexagonal grille has a three dimensional mesh pattern, in keeping with WRX’s sporty nature, together with the hawk-eye headlights.

The WRX concept sedan is low and sleek, with a more powerful design than previous production versions.

A large opening in the front bumper, plus a classic WRX bonnet scoop, wing ducts and flared wheel arches denote the powerful turbocharged engine performance and handling.

A sharp character line runs from the front guard through to the rear, intersected by powerful wheel arches, emphasizing WRX’s renowned All-Wheel Drive capability.

The rear design echoes the hexagonal design motif from the front grille and features a dramatically curved boot lid that also acts as a rear spoiler.

The wide rear bumper adds to the powerful street presence of the car and is offset by large quad exhausts, while the aggressive rear diffuser improves vehicle aerodynamics.

To further enhance handling dynamics, the concept features a carbon roof for a lower centre of gravity and lighter weight.

The concept colour is “WR Blue Pearl III” and modernizes the traditional WRX look.

Fluorescent Yellow is used as an accent on the WRX front grille badge, brake callipers and the exhaust finisher, adding character notes to the design.

The 245/40ZR20 Dunlop tyres have an exclusive design tread pattern. The wheels are BBS “RI-D” One Piece Forged Duralumin.

Body size (Overall Length x Width x Height): (4520 X 1890 X 1390 mm)

Wheelbase: (2760 mm)

FHI is yet to confirm timing for unveil and launch of next generation WRX.

The special site on the Subaru Global Site http://www.subaru-global.com/ms2013/ny/ will be updated with information relating to the New York International Auto Show. This will include images of the WRX concept as well as a movie of Subaru’s press conference.

Subaru also unveiled the XV Crosstrek Hybrid in New York.

It is Subaru’s first hybrid vehicle and the U.S. specification model balances XV’s fun-to-drive character and environmental friendliness.

The simple and practical hybrid system is integrated into the Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system. The motor assist function of the electric motor delivers increased torque, responsive power, economy and low emissions.

While its weight balance remains the same as the U.S. specification XV Crosstrek, chassis performance is refined exclusively for the hybrid model, delivering a sporty yet stable drive.

XV Crosstrek Hybrid will be introduced to the U.S. market during late Northern Autumn this year.

There are currently no plans for XV Hybrid to be sold in Australia.

HYBRID SYSTEM AND POWER UNIT
The system offers smooth and responsive acceleration with a motor assist function and the excellent fuel efficiency.

Based on the Lineartronic™ Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) of the petrol XV Crosstrek, a motor exclusively designed for the hybrid model is integrated inside the transmission case and installed behind the primary pulley.

A 2.0-litre DOHC horizontally-opposed four-cylinder petrol engine was partially modified for the hybrid model, including reduction in engine friction.

By installing the high voltage battery under the cargo space, the overall front:rear weight distribution and the low centre of gravity are maintained.

The hybrid system offers EV (Electric Vehicle) driving at low speeds and motor assist driving at medium speeds. Enhanced fuel efficiency and responsive driving experience are achieved.

CHASSIS
Exclusive tuning of the front and rear suspension, enhanced body rigidity and quick steering gear ratio enhance the sportiness of the XV Crosstrek Hybrid.

DESIGN
A simple and clean design motif is adopted for the exterior and interior enhancements, which differentiate the car form petrol XV. The design embodies eco-friendliness and advanced technologies.

For the exterior, exclusive parts for the hybrid include rear combination lights and alloy wheel patterns. Hybrid badges are located at the front edges of the front doors and on the hatch.

Inside, the Multi-Function Display shows the hybrid system’s energy flow according to driving conditions.

A new “Plasma Green Pearl” exterior colour is used on display car.
