The electric Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV is now available for order in Australia, marking the first all-electric Maybach ever.

The historic brand was born in 1909 but fell on tough times. It was acquired by Daimler-Benz in 1960 as little more than a name on a title deed. Reborn in 2002, the Maybach name struggled yet again, limping on as a stretched S Class at a Rolls-Royce price. Buyers didn’t warm to it, not one bit.

In 2015, Maybach became a sub brand of the Mercedes Group, and sold as a Mercedes-Maybach, it was every bit as luxurious as the many Maybachs before it. The mother brand continues to breathe new life into the Maybach as the Maybach coachwork slips into the electric era.

Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, highlights that “the vehicle merges the best of Mercedes-Benz technologies with unique Maybach comfort features,” while Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes-Maybach, promises “an extraordinary electric driving experience.”

Electric Performance

The EQS 680 SUV is driven by two permanently excited synchronous e-motors located at the front and rear axles. Together, these motors produce a mountainous 484 kW/ 950Nm with an ample 0 to 100 km/h of 4.4 seconds, and on to a top speed of 210 km/h. The SUV consumes an equally unfathomable 20.2 kWh/100km yet manages a range of 662 km NEDC.

Charging uses a 22 kW AC onboard charger, but out and about will take 200 kW of DC fast-charging to get from 10 to 80% in around 31 minutes.

Luxurious 1st class Rear-Seat Experience

The EQS 680 SUV prioritises the rear-seat passengers.  The executive rear seats have ventilation, massage, neck and shoulder heating, and calf massage. The amply-priced Chauffeur Package a reclining position to rest regally. The are 11.6-inch displays with the MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment System, wireless headsets, and an MBUX rear tablet.

Buyers can take it a step further with the optional Night Series Edition for $34,900, after which the First-Class Rear Suite for $14,900 becomes available. It adds sumptuous rear armchairs, a heated rear-seat centre console, refrigerated compartment, and foldable tables. There is something for the fussiest queen.

Superior Ride Comfort

There is standard AIRMATIC air suspension with adjustable damping, with ultra-smooth ride and can increase the vehicle height by 35 mm. The MAYBACH drive program replaces COMFORT mode, optimizing rear passenger comfort by minimizing body movement. Rear-axle steering reduces the turning circle so your man can get into tighter spaces. Your man should always be able to be easily available, for one reason or another.

Serenity and Sound

Noise and vibration suppression were key aims of development. Encapsulated electric drive trains and specialized acoustic foams reducing noise levels. Owners won’t be carting much more than designer bag bags (so to speak), so there is a fixed luggage compartment cover which adds even more separation between an occupant and anything that ruffles unrufflable feathers. Other tasty treats include a Disconnect Unit (DCU) for the front axle motor, and laminated glass panes. The Burmester 4D surround sound system with Dolby Atmos immerses listeners in a studio-like audio experience. Its customisable 4D sound and real-time sound design algorithms create the “Aerial Grace” driving sound.

Distinctive Design

You notice the EQS 680 SUV because of its immense presence with its Mercedes star on the bonnet, chrome-plated strips on the front panel, and 22-inch Maybach alloy wheels. The rear highlights include a continuous light strip, chrome accents, and MAYBACH lettering. Standard DIGITAL LIGHT headlights provide a special light show, but sir can option two-tone paintwork for a mere $34,000.

Innovative Features

Other luxurious features include automatic comfort doors, which open and close remotely via MBUX, and the MBUX Hyperscreen, which integrates three high-resolution displays under a single layer of Perspex. The front seats are heated and cooled, with power adjustment and memory settings, and there is a panoramic sliding sunroof and a premium steering wheel. Depending on the options chosen, the cabin will be adorned by posh materials such as MANUFAKTUR Exclusive Leather, open-pore brown birch wood, and Nappa leather finishes.

The Environment

Mercedes-Maybach places sustainability firmly on its agenda, with vegetable-tanned leather using coffee bean shells, recycled water, and plant-based liquoring agents. Materials such as Econyl carpet from recycled nylon and secondary steel and aluminium further reduce environmental impact.

Night Series Edition ($34,000)

The EQS 680 SUV Night Series Edition adds dark chrome elements, rose gold emblems, and unique interior touches. There are paint finishes called by exotic names like Obsidian Black or MANUFAKTUR Opalite White Bright, with the option for a two-tone finish.

Price

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV is priced at $328,607 (MRLP) in Australia, with options such as the First Class Rear Suite and Night Series Edition increasing the cost. The latter must be optioned in order to order the former, as the actress said to the bishop. Deliveries are set to begin in July.
