As if BMW didn’t have enough models, the next generation X2 Coupé which includes the fully electric iX2 xDrive30 is here, followed by the iX2 eDrive20 later this year. Petrol models start with the 4-cylinder X2 xDrive20i and tops out with the 233kw X2 M35i xDrive. The X2 M35i’s 2.0-litre 4-cylinder does the 0-100km/h in 5.4-seconds.
X2 are made on a single assembly line at BMW Plant Regensburg in Germany, where there iX2’s battery is also built.
For those confused about the rise of the term “Sports Activity Vehicle”, fear not, you’re not alone. It comes from the desire of car makers to create a need for a segment which hadn’t previously existed. In most cases, SAV is used for smallish vehicles we once amusingly termed “Soft Roaders”. The carriage is less inclined to be seen in mud and more likely to be seen parked up at a Prada shop. Does that mean it is less capable? Almost certainly, yes.
The coupé version of an SUV is a less practical design with a rear end truncated by a large hatch window. In a market where passenger cars account for less than 15% of total sales, SUV/SAV/UTE account for almost all the remaining vehicle sales. Each brand is waving a desperate hand in order to be noticed. Each claims to be better than the last generation, and often better than the competition.
Since a buyer often uses a gut-feeling, the tangible inclusions are frequently less relevant than impression a car leaves in the buyer’s mind on first glance. Gay buyers tell us they want value for money, but that a badge that a prestige doesn’t hurt. BMW is consistently among the top picks on an LGBTI shopping list so the marketing department is doing a great job.

Exterior
BMW X2 is the coupé version of the BMW X1, and is 194mm longer than the old model (now 4,554mm), 21mm wider (now 1,845mm) and 64mm taller (now 1,590mm). The longer wheelbase creates more space inside with the cargo capacity now 560-1,470 litres, and BMW iX2 now 525 and 1,400 litres.
BMW X2 has LED headlights and an almost hexagonal BMW kidney grille. The arching roofline, flows over a coupé-shaped silhouette to the flared wheel arches at the rear. and muscular shoulders come to the fore. The horizontal contours of the model-specific rear light design further enrich the sporting flavour, as do a Gurney-style spoiler and striking rear apron.
