The 4th generation BMW X3 has debuted and be available Australia early next year.
Like many other brands, BMW is adding 48volt mild-hybrid to its engines, and is stressing eco credentials while emphasising quality. BMW claims their 4th generation will continue the sames success of the outgoing model, has a high-quality interior, uses sustainable materials and technology, is a better drive, and has more gear.
Only 2 posh models come to our shores initially: BMW X3 20 xDrive and BMW X3 M50 xDrive. The X3 M50 xDrive 293kW/580Nm 3.0L M Twin turbo has an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and all-wheel drive. Its 0-100kph is 4.6 seconds, 0.2 second quicker than the current model.
The new X3 20 xDrive has a Twin Turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine with 140kW/310Nm and a 0-100 of a more leisurely 8.5 seconds.

Dimensions:
- 4,755mm long ( 34mm longer)
- 1,920mm wide (29mm wider)
- 1,636mm front track (16mm wider)
- 1,681mm rear track (45mm wider)
- 25mm lower
X3’s rather busy split kidney grille comes standard with the “Glow contour lighting”, with twin adaptive LED headlights that have L-shaped light elements. They have standard matrix high beam and blue design detailing, Quite a departure from the outgoing BMW X3.
The substantial silhouette is BMW X3’s best angle. It has short overhangs, a gently sloping roofline with a rear end that has an upright tail gate window allowing for more space inside. The flush door handles give the side view a simplicity somewhat lacking elsewhere.
The (very large) LED taillights have a T-shaped graphic with 3D glass lenses. The rear end substantial look is emphasised by a smaller window and very large painted area.
Exterior paints colour combinations will allow personalisation in colours such as Dune Grey and BMW Individual paints with “Frozen” options. As in the pictures, lighter colours make the X3 look slightly plain, especially from the rear, so an option to add some personality is much needed.
X3 20 xDrive comes with 19” alloys and X3 M50 xDrive is standard with 21-inch M light alloy wheels.
The X3 M50 xDrive comes standard with M Sport Package Pro, with its M lights Shadowline, M seat belts and M sport brakes finished in high-gloss red.
The mechanicals:
Improvements have been made in the double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle, and there is adaptive suspension to aid both handling and comfort.
BMW has always prided itself on being a great driving experience. Its SUVs are among the best handlers in the business as the passenger car demand wanes.
The Cabin:
The cabin highlights include a high-definition BMW Curved Display, BMW Interaction Bar, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a new-look gear selector lever. Depending on the model, there is theme lighting in contrasting colours in the centre console and door trims.
There is a decent size boot with 570L (1,700 seats down) which gives the owner space for plenty of bits and bobs.
X3 seats with heated and power adjusted covered in Veganza, a material requiring fewer carbon emissions than regular leather. The textile instrument panel is made from recycled polyester with a knitted texture, the first for a BMW model. The centre console has the command centre for iDrive, 9.
The latest system lets uses access fast functions using QuickSelect without searching menus.
Other features and aids include:
- front collision warning
- Steering and Lane Control Assistant
- Lane Departure Warning
- Driving Assistant Professional
- Parking Assistant Plus with surround view camera.
- Live Cockpit Professional
- BMW Head-Up Display with Augmented View function in the control display.
Australian X3 models are made at the BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA in addition to production planned at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, South Africa, commencing in 2025.
Pricing and specification details will be announced next month, with new vehicles arriving for customer deliveries in Q1, 2025.
