We are close to 50 years of Honda Civic, with the 11th generation set to launch soon. It comes only in the VTi LX trim level, a brave move. Even braver, than a single model, is the model price, $47,200 (drive-away). Honda has always fancied themselves as a premium car maker, but will buyers agree?
The rollout of the all new Honda Civic will see an e:HEV hybrid, and Type R coming later in, in 2022. The Type R will be the most powerful Type R ever, and the hybrid will be similar to the excellent Accord hybrid already on sale.
Honda explains that the Honda is focusing on the booming SUV segment, with only Civic and the low-volume Accord left in their passenger car range, after the Jazz and City were dropped. Honda Odyssey, the people mover, is the 4th best seller of Honda’s 5 model lineup.

Will Honda attract 50k buyers to Civic?
The big increase in Civic pricing is a surprise move, and the question is: do buyers agree? The small hatch segment is price-driven, with Toyota’s Corolla (23,404) outselling the entire Honda range (13,460) buy almost double. It is worth noting Honda’s sales are down by 38.5% on this time last year.
With that in mind, Honda has placed Civic in the premium segment, but whether buyers with near on 50k will accept a Civic as a premium car, remains to be seen.
The striking new design comes in hatchback only, with the sedan previously axed. LED lighting brings Civic up to market expectation, with Blind Spot Monitor fitted, as required for 5 Star Safety ratings.
The cabin is far less busy than the 10th gen car.
Highlights include:
- Blind Spot Monitoring
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert
- Knee airbags – driver and front passenger
- Traffic Jam Assist
- Driver attention monitor
- 9-inch Advanced Display Audio touchscreen system (largest ever fitted to a Honda vehicle)
- Wireless Apple Car Play
- Qi-compatible wireless phone charger
- Bose premium sound system with 12-speaker
- Over the Air (OTA) display audio software and navigation map updates
- 18-inch alloy wheels with noise-reducing resonator technology
- Pop-up bonnet safety system
- Acoustic windscreen
- ‘Smart Clear Wiper’ windscreen wiper/washer system
- Heated & auto-retractable door mirrors
- Plasmacluster ion-based air purification technology
- Suede-inset seat trim with seamless panelling
- Four-way electrically adjustable front passenger seat
- Rear passenger air vents
- Ambient door trim and front footwell lighting
Vents are concealed with clever twist stalks the only hint that airflow comes from within the dash trim panel. The driver dials are part digital, with a 7” LCD screen covering much of the instrument panel. Infotainment via the new 9” touchscreen is placed tablet-style at the top of the dash.
Audio controls now include a physical volume knob to replace the touch controls, with dual-zone climate settings just below. Bose sound, and touches of metal-like trim, take the cabin to a new level, without losing what made Honda Civic a long-serving favourite.
Red stitching and man-made leather and suede, look classy. The absence of real leather is becoming widespread, and should be harder wearing than the natural alternative. Both front seats have power controls, with the driver getting 8-way settings.
Like previous models, Civic has a CVT automatic transmission, channelling the 4cylinder’s 131kw/240Nm power to the front wheels.
Safety and driver aids have been stepped up, see specifications sheet for more.
Will this move by Honda be a stroke of genius, or the final nail in the coffin for Honda’s small hatch?
