“The fact that we were able to conclude this exceptionally challenging year with yet a further record is great validation of our consistent growth strategy,” said Markus Flasch, chairman of the board of BMW M GmbH.

“We can be particularly proud of the fact that we were able not only to defend our market dominance as the most successful provider of performance and high-performance automobiles, but also to have even expanded it.”

Record sales for BMW M in Australia

BMW Group Australia also had record sales of BMW M in 2020 with 4,659 new vehicle registrations.

Sales were strong with X5 M Competition for the year were up a staggering 5300% (108 for 2020 vs 16 in 2019), with X6 M Competition up 690% (79 versus 8 in 2019). Both the X5 M and X6 M saw introduction of highly acclaimed new generation models in early 2020. It isn’t hard to be up by such huge percentages when starting from such low initial figures though.

Further more, X3 M and X4 M Competition were up by 210% and 172% respectively.

Other highlights included triple digit sales percentage increases for M135i xDrive, M340i xDrive and X7 M50i.

Growing demand in key markets

New records in both the USA and China, while sales were up by more than 60 per cent in both Russia and Korea. In Italy, the rise was 47 per cent.

“We notice a steadily growing demand in all relevant markets for BMW M automobiles,” said Thomas Felbermair, head of Sales and Marketing at BMW M GmbH.

“Because of this and thanks to the engagement of our strong dealer network, we have been outstandingly successful in coping with the challenges posed by the pandemic.”

Primed for launch: BMW M5 CS, BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupé

The initial focus for 2021 will be the new BMW M5 CS, later this month. This special edition of the BMW M5 will be a 1st and will have outstanding performance and exclusive motorsport characteristics.

In March, the sixth-generation BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupé launches.

M cars will have a manual shift alongside a Competition model with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

By the end of the year the BMW M3 and M4 Competition have M xDrive, the first time these models will have an all-wheel-drive system.

In addition, the BMW M4 Convertible will launch during 2021 with an BMW M3 Touring under development.

A glance into the future: continued growth, electrification and an anniversary

“It is remarkable that it was possible to achieve the new sales record even before the launch of our most important models,” Flasch added. “The new BMW M3 and BMW M4 generation offers us the promise of dynamic growth in 2021 as well.”

Flasch said he also looked forward to electrific M cars. Later this year, BMW M GmbH will present an electrically powered performance vehicle for the first time.

With this setting of an agenda with which the “Power of Choice” strategy has been realised within the model range of BMW M GmbH – as well as an exceptionally strong product line-up – the company heads into the forthcoming anniversary year full of optimism.

Flasch said the year 2022, BMW M GmbH will have its 50th anniversary, which would be marked by “a year full of surprises”.

“If I mention the keyword special edition models, it should be clear what our customers can look forward to during the anniversary year,” he said.
