Australia’s off-road icon is getting a jolt — but not a plug. Toyota has just confirmed the first-ever hybrid LandCruiser, due to hit local roads (and many roads that aren’t) in early 2026. But forget dainty EVs and range anxiety — this is hybrid power done the Toyota way: unapologetically rugged and relentlessly practical.
Dubbed the LandCruiser 300 Series Performance Hybrid, this new variant ditches the diesel for a 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 mated to a beefy one-motor parallel hybrid system. The result? More torque, more power, and the kind of effortless off-road control only electric assist can provide. It’s been put through the wringer — deserts, mountains, probably half the Middle East — and came out grinning. This hybrid is no showroom softie.
While full EVs are the flavour of the month, Toyota’s having none of it — at least, not yet. Their bZ4X has managed just 371 sales so far in 2025, with its Subaru Solterra twin shifting 111 and Lexus RZ only 32. That’s a combined 514 units — a trickle compared to rivals like Tesla, BYD, and Polestar who are riding the EV wave like it’s Bondi in January.
Instead, Toyota is doubling down on hybrids. And frankly, for the LandCruiser crowd — farmers, tourers, grey nomads and tradies — that’s not a bad thing. A full EV ‘Cruiser would need an outback-sized battery and charging station at the Birdsville Hotel. Until that’s reality, a hybrid V6 that can tow, tour, and traverse is the smart middle ground.

Toyota Australia VP Sean Hanley calls it “a level of capability never before seen on our flagship four-wheel drive.” And while that might sound like PR fluff, it rings true. Hybrid brings a new layer of control to low-speed crawling and technical terrain, without compromising towing or range. It’s the sort of hybrid that doesn’t just reduce fuel use — it actually makes the vehicle better.
Let’s not forget, Toyota’s hybrid story started back in 2001 with the Prius. Since then, they’ve become the masters of electrified reliability. This new performance hybrid LandCruiser is the natural evolution — not a revolution — and that’s precisely what many Aussies want: less guilt, more grunt.
So no, it’s not electric in the way Tesla fans might hope — but it’s electrified enough to keep the LandCruiser marching into the future, one remote track at a time.
