The new C-HR, slightly less confronting than the previous model, comes with new technology and two 5th generation hybrid drivetrains. The 1.8L and 2.0L petrol engines are Euro 5 compliant, a brave move with new “Euro 6d” Australian emissions regulations on the way.
The European designed C-HR comes in 3 trim levels, GXL, Koba, and GR Sport, built on the TNGA-C platform. GXL and Koba have a 103kw FWD hybrid drive, while GR Sport adds AWD to a 2.0L 146kw hybrid setup. Both drivetrains use a CVT automatic.

ABOVE: All New Toyota C-HR
All models have a tasty range of standard driver and safety aids, with the only options being premium paint.
Toyota C-HR pricing
- GXL: $42,990
- Koba: $49,990
- GR Sport: $54,990
Options:
- Two-Tone premium paint: $775
- Two-Tone Plus premium paint: $1,550
- Two-Tone Plus premium paint + panoramic roof: $2,700
Suspension should provide a decent ride and handling balance, with Macpherson Struts up front and a multilink setup for the rear. The space saver spare is replaced by an inflation kit in the AWD version.
Design:
Toyota makes much of C-HR’s hammer head design which debuted in the bZ4X Electric SUV. The angular look is highlighted by a new u-shaped headlight (LED matrix on top models) design and a flashy horizontal bar of rear lights. Flush-fitting door handles seen in other Toyota/Lexus models have made their way down the food chain. As well as giving the look a clean finish, they come with smart entry, eliminating ugly key holes.
The wedge shape forms an aggressive 4-door coupe, now so popular with car builders, allowing for a hatchback rear end. It is particularly obvious in the 2-tone paint job.
Ground clearance is a modest 130mm so C-HR is a comfortable soft roader/city car only, no heavy duty goat tracks please.
Whether you like the look or not, you can’t ignore it.
The interior
The cabin is promised to create a premium impression on those who cross the threshold. There is no doubt about a huge leap in Toyota cabins over the last few years. The drab is gone, replaced by something a little less function-over-form.
Top models are lavished with a 9-speaker JBL audio system, twin 12.3” digital screens, colour head up display, and a digital rear view mirror. There is wireless charging, wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, and luxurious seat heating for toasty buns.
GR Sport adds tasteful red highlights, giving the cabin a sporty twist.
The faceted body creates a coupe look, making the cabin cosy, but not a place 4 large adults will find sufficiently roomy for longer trips. Buy a car for the purpose it was designed for, in this case a smart little high-riding hatch that catches the eye of passers-by at traffic lights.
Safety and Driver aids:
Toyota safety sense includes all the usual creature comforts. Apart from the smart cruise, smart lane control, and intelligent emergency systems, there is smart automated parking controlling brakes, steering and braking.
Like most new cars, C-HR comes with connected services that allow remote connection via an app, over-the-air updates, and emergency assistance.
Final thoughts:
C-HR looks ok, has a decent cabin, and an up-to-date suite of electronics. It is pricey, and its Euro 5 drivetrain will need updating by 2025. Even so, the hybrids deliver fuel economy as low as 4.1L/100k, emit less CO2, and cause less pain at the pump. The 41L tank should be good for at least 700km around town, as we’ve seen in some of our previous reviews.
Toyota has been a little slow taking up the EV banner, but their hybrids are among the best you can get. Toyota and Lexus stuck with the part electric system when all others abandoned it. Perhaps that is why Toyota is pushing for a hybrid option in every model range, and in C-HR’s case, it is an all-hybrid offering.
Gay buyers like a badge, but they also demand quality and reliability and we will be asking you what you think of the C-HR when we do our little film.
A full review will follow soon.
