BMW has released price and details of the new 2022 i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 all electric 4 door sedan.
The BMW i4 M50 has dual motors, one at the front and another at the rear for a 400kW output with a range of 510 km. The 250kW BMW i4 eDrive40 powers rear-wheels only, with a range of 590 kilometres. All BMW i4 are made at BMW’s Munich factory.
The Munich factory uses electricity from hydroelectric plants in Bavaria, part of BMW Group’s plan to reduce its emissions by 80 per cent by 2030.

Flexible vehicle architecture
BMW i4 uses a new flexible vehicle architecture to move towards pure electric mobility.
There are many unique features such as the compact drive units that have an elastic bearing in their respective axle subframes.
The high-voltage battery is super slim, at 110 millimetres high. It is positioned low down in the vehicle floor for a good centre of gravity 53 millimetres lower than that of the BMW 3 series.
Model-specific chassis technology and electric all-wheel drive
BMW i4 uses double-joint spring strut front axle at the front, and five-link rear axle with bespoke tuning and adaptive M suspension lift-related dampers, electromechanical Servotronic steering and integrated braking system.
The fifth-generation BMW eDrive has drive units that combine the electric motor, power electronics and transmission in a single unit.
The performance characteristics of the motors are defined by their considerable torque. This is available on tap from pull-away and sustained over an extremely wide rev band.
If maximum power is needed for more than 10 seconds, the BMW i4 M50 activates Sport Boost, that takes the system maximum 795Nm torque. The 0-100km/h dash is done in 3.9 seconds on M50 and 0-100km/h time of just 5.7 seconds on eDrive 40. The latter has maximum torque of 430Nm.
Recharge by Braking
Adaptive recuperation adds extra range. In D, regenerative braking can be set to high, medium or low. In B, high regenerative activated automatically, giving the i4 one-pedal driving.
Maximum regenerative power is 116kW in the BMW i4 eDrive40 and 195kW in the BMW i4 M50.
High-voltage battery
BMW eDrive uses the latest battery cell technology. The 84kWh lithium-ion battery density is 20 per cent higher than the current BMW i3. It uses an integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin, battery and drive system. This system operates via a heat pump.
Anticipatory thermal management allows the operating temperature of the high-voltage battery to be optimised ahead of a stop at a fast-charging station, paving the way for rapid and efficient charging.
Onboard DC charging accommodates up to 200kW input. If drivers had a free 10 minutes on a longer trip, range could be extended by 164 kilometres (BMW i4 eDrive40) and 140 kilometres (BMW i4 M50).
