I unboxed a duo of daring Dashcams a year ago and since then have been using in my test cars. Kia’s Sorento is this week’s car so it seemed only fair to take it all out for a spin.
The MiCam GPS ($369) and Sensor XL ($499 for dual cam model) were suctioned to the front window, and the XL DC rear camera Blutacked to the rear window.
The Sorento looked more like a TV studio than a quality family conveyance.
The reason I like Navman devices is the tickety-boo manufacture. They have high-end glass lenses and G sensors to record accidents. Sophisticated programming captures road misdemeanours, minor or otherwise.
My footage shows just how careless some drivers are.
We nipped up to Drover’s Rest but cut the midweek get away short. Sydney was going in to lockdown, again.

ABOVE: 2021 Kia Sorento S and NavMan Dashcams
The Car:
Keep in mind some of the cars we review are worth many hundreds of thousands, and some are humble. Sorento S is a big chunk of metal, full of technology and had you not glimpsed the range topper at the dealer, you would never gnash your teeth when a GT-Line drives last.
The boys and I piled into the Kia along with our bits and bobs. There seemed to be endless space in this well-designed cabin.
Petrol engines aren’t renowned for sparkling economy, but Kia manages to eek a good figure out of the Sorento with an 8-speed automatic. Front wheel scamper and scramble, because 200kw is a bunch of kw’s to put up front.
2 hours each way passed fast. Those in the back can really stretch out.
What we liked:
- Fabulous looks
- Great interior space
- Excellent ride
- Very quiet inside even at speed.
Not so Much
- No AWD in petrol cars
- FWS too skittish especially in the damp
- Fabric for seats wasn’t all that nice.
The Dashcams:
We tucked the cables away so as not to tangle them in our heels. There is nothing worse than stepping elegantly into the night trailing 2 metres of sundry technology.
All 4 drivers recorded events to view later. We could see that being a thing. Looking at our trip later was kind of cool. The rear camera is great for perving at tradies.
The price is right, and they’re easy to use. We didn’t think much of the driver asstance warning etc.
