Kia K4 looked promising in the teaser pictures released earlier in the month, but the in-flesh photos show a clunky, awkward fastback design.
The Kia release uses many PR-Speak phrases like “Opposites United” to explain the design. Breath-taking concept sketches look like 2 different ideas clumsily glued together when viewed in the finished product.
The Exterior
The angular character lines over the wheel arches work well in the EV9 SUV, but when applied to a small passenger car, look fat and blocky. It is as if designers took the gorgeous Stinger and put straight square creases where flowing metal once was.
The rear looks particularly heavy with concealed door handles leaving a vast area of featureless landscape. The transition between the rear door, 3rd side window, and rear window is equally jarring.

K4’s head and tail lights create a bright point with areas of interest in the very large daytime running lights. The signature tiger-nose grille has been reduced to a mere suggestion, with vertical light arrays defining the front and rear ends.
The Cabin
K4’s interior design is far closer to current Kia models. The neat and clean look is thanks to clear and distinct switch gear and storage zones. A strong horizontal line runs across the dash and steering wheel, defining familiar buttons and vents. The climate and infotainment controls have a physical presence instead of being virtual buttons on a screen, something buyers will like. USB-C outlets, a conventional gear selector, and generous cup holder/storage bin continue Kia’s sensible approach to useable passenger areas.
The picture shows an unattractive olive green K4 tone which reminds me of a 60’s Mini. The Slate Green is joined by Medium Gray, Canyon Brown, and Onyx Black as options.
The Global Premier
The global Kia K4 reveal is at the New York International Auto Show on March 27, 2024. Many cars look better in the metal, let’s hope this is one of them.
