The Audi A6 e-tron concept first appeared at the Auto Shanghai 2021 trade fair as a signal what to expect in the new line of all-electric models.
At a time when SUVs appear to be taking over, passenger cars are not yet completely forgotten. Now, Audi is rolling out the A6 e-tron as a Sportback and Avant (aka wagon), marking its place as the second model on the PPE platform. This upper mid-size vehicle mixes familiar performance, range, efficiency, and charging to the table, and adds a new flat floor concept. The sporty exterior and an comfortable yet elegant interior includes features such as second-generation virtual exterior mirrors, a panoramic glass roof that turns opaque with a button press, and illuminated rings at the rear.

The Exterior
The A6 e-tron’s body has elegant clean flowing lines continuing a theme started by other Audi e-Tron cars.
The front has slim daytime running lights and a wide grille giving the car a flat, wide look. A black mask is a nod to the e-tron design language, making the main headlights and other elements look cohesive.
The graceful roofline and low ride height give the A6 e-tron a sporty look. Quattro blisters emphasize the quattro drive with their muscular shape. A black insert in the sill area highlights the battery, extending to the rear for a sleek, stretched appearance. The Avant has a flat roofline and sytlish aluminum-look trim from the A-pillar to the roof spoiler.
Best-in-Class Aerodynamics
Aerodynamics have always been a key part of Audi’s success. The A6 e-tron continues this legacy with a cw value of 0.21 for the Sportback, making it the most aerodynamic vehicle in the VW Group, and 0.24 for the Avant, placing it among the best in its segment.
The front air curtains to improve airflow around the car and wheels. A controllable cool-air intake under the Singleframe minimizes air loss. The underbody is highly sealed with optimized components, including wheel trims and 3D bumps ahead of the front wheels. The rear’s wide, aerodynamically optimised diffuser balances lift and cw value, aided by an additional spoiler on the Avant. Virtual exterior mirrors further reduce drag, enhancing the car’s aerodynamics.
Cutting-Edge Lighting Technology
Audi’s A6 e-tron showcases advanced lighting technology, a staple of Audi design. The headlights and rear lights have a 3D design with digital light signatures. The rear features digital OLED lights with around 45 segments per panel, enabling car-to-x communication and boosting road safety.
The second-generation digital OLED rear lights have ten panels with 450 segments, generating a new image several times per second. This active digital light signature is also used at the front, creating a cohesive, intelligent lighting experience. The rear lights also include proximity detection and a communication light that warns other road users of hazards.
High-Tech Interior and Infotainment
Inside, the A6 e-tron is all about the user. The MMI panoramic display includes an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit, a 14.5-inch touch display, and a 10.9-inch passenger display. Active Privacy Mode allows the passenger to enjoy entertainment without distracting the driver.
The second-generation augmented reality head-up display projects relevant information onto the windshield. The interior design creates a cozy ambiance with a “soft wrap” that extends across the panel width. Comfort areas feature generous surfaces and soft materials, while control areas are designed for clarity and precision.
A smart panoramic glass roof with switchable transparency minimizes direct sunlight, becoming opaque at the touch of a button, enhancing comfort.
Performance and Charging
The A6 e-tron’s electric motors and a new lithium-ion battery have a range of over 756 kilometers for the Sportback and over 720 kilometers for the Avant. With up to 270 kW of system output, the A6 e-tron has a 0 to 100 km/h of 5.4 seconds, on to a top speed of 210 km/h. The S6 e-tron has more power with a 0-100 km/h of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/h.
800-volt technology gives the A6 e-tron 310 kilometers of range in ten minutes at fast charging stations. Its advanced recuperation handles around 95% of everyday braking processes, and an integrated Brake System for efficient regenerative braking.
Driving Dynamics and Comfort
The A6 e-tron’s suspension system provides a comfortable balance of ride and sporty handling. The adaptive air suspension adjusts to road conditions and regulates the body’s ride height. The rear-biased all-wheel drive system enhances driving dynamics with variable torque distribution.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
The A6 e-tron has a range of driver assistance systems including
- adaptive driving assistant plus
- park assist plus
- a reversing camera
- traffic sign recognition
It is an exciting time for Audi, a brand that has managed handsome looks blended with modern drive systems considerably better its fellow carmakers.
Audi A6 e-tron combines cutting-edge technology, improved aerodynamics, and fabulous performance in a stylish package. Despite the claims otherwise, eco-friendly EVs are proving to be vastly superior to conventional drivetrains. Haters will continue to hate and while they’re entitled to their own opinions, they aren’t entitled to their own “facts”.
