2020 Audi Q7 QUATTRO S-Line Review

Audi Q7 was handsome, but aging so it got a nip and tuck.

We took the big SUV down the M5 for a tasty light lunch at Picton, our usual haunt. We came back via the Grand Pacific Drive and through the Royal National Park. So, After a week in the saddle, and after probing every single nook and cranny, what did we think of the old girl?

What the best bits about Audi Q7?

Surely, the imposing, handsome face, subtle, elegant lines, and impressive performance make finding the best bit almost impossible. They’re all good, and they all deserve a mention.

Headlights have a matrix of LED cells that come on in poor light, and mold the light so no one is ever dazzled. In addition, there is easy entry and start, so the key stays in your pocket. The tailgate has a kick-to-open function, and the air suspension will squat or rise to make loading the boot easier.

How Many Seats has Audi Q7 Got?

There are 7 seats, but the 3rd row is definitely for people you’re not so find of. Space back there is bijou to say the least. 2nd row seats get 2 climate zones, and front seats have another 2 zones. Front seats get powered adjustment with 2 memory positions, and there is seat heating to turn frosty mornings in to a warm hug.

How easy is Audi Q7 technology to understand?

When we first started using electronic menus for settings, we hated it. It was hard to use and everything was far too many clicks away. Audi sorted all that would a couple of touch screens that tap gently against your fingers when you make a selection. Haptic feedback lets you know you’ve actually touched a button, virtually.

Menus are extensive, but some oft-used settings are a few too many clicks away. Actually, it is so sexy to use, I don’t really mind. It gives you more time to fiddle the luscious tablets.

The driver gets an LCD screen instead of dials. You can play tunes through wireless Apple CarPlay while a navigation map is in front of the driver. There is an HUD to project even more data directly onto the windscreen, but it feels like a bit of overkill.

An owner would tailor things to their own wants.

How Much Space does Audi Q7 have?

It is a 7-seater that manages to feel roomy, yet cosy. 5 passengers are going to feel like they’re in a limo, 7? Not so much. The boot is huge, and the luggage cover slides up and out of the way when the tailgate opens.

What Engine Does Audi Q7 50 TDI have?

Once upon a time, you knew what a car had under the bonnet by what badge it had on the back, but now you have to go to the interwebz.

Although the 3.0L turbo Diesel packs a bunch of wallop, it isn’t in an obvious kind of way. 210kw and 600Nm of torque gets to the AWD QUATTRO system through a smooth 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

Q7 is frugal with a combined figure of 6.8L/100k, and gets to 100 kph in just 6.5 seconds. That is mighty impressive for something the size of a small block of flats.

What is Audi Q7 Like to Drive?

It is a peach.

Drive modes include ones with sportier aspirations, but Q7 is too large and too heavy to be really sporty, and the ride is all the better for it. Instead, Q7 is luxurious, and the limo-like ride is exceptional. Q7 is quickly taking the place of the A7 and A7 sedans, perhaps even the A5 and A7 sports models. Buyers want value for money, and premium buyers are no different.

Steering has weight to it, but isn’t particularly lively. That is just not what Q7 is meant to be used for.

Q7 loves highways, but I fear most will not see a lot of long-distance travel. Q7 buyers are more likely to drive to the airport and fly. Perhaps COVID will make them re-think holiday plans?

Conclusion:

I like a big, spacious, luxury SUV as much as the next person. Once they were known as gas guzzlers, but no one can complain about 6.8L/100k. I like it a lot and it gets full marks for comfort and design.
