As DEEPAL Australia prepares for the November launch of its first vehicle, the S07 SUV (a facelifted version of the S7) it’s clear this all-electric SUV is aimed firmly at tesla Model Y. Unlike Model Y, the S07 has listened to the buyer rather than asking the buyer to battle a new car design. There are still some traditional controls, and although no driver dials, there is an HUD.
With a futuristic design, up-to-date technology, and a decent interior, the S07 is the first appearance of several cars Deepal evaluated for sale locally. The Prado-sized G318 and Model 3 size L07 are being considered, as well as the Cybertruck-like E07.
Let’s dive into what makes the DEEPAL S07 tick.
Power and Performance:
At the heart of the S07 is an impressive 160kW motor, delivering a punchy 320Nm of torque. This ensures a dynamic and responsive drive, whether you’re zipping through city streets or cruising down country highways. Paired with a 79.97kWh battery, the S07 offers a 475km WLTP range on a single charge, making it perfect for everything from daily commutes to long-distance road trips.
For those who are short on time, the S07’s fast-charging capabilities are sure to impress. A quick (92kw max DC) 35-minute pit stop will take you from 30% to 80% charge, while a full charge on an AC charger can be achieved in 8-11 hours, depending on your setup. Not only does this electric SUV pack power, but it’s also smartly efficient with an energy consumption rate of 18.6kWh/100km.
Italian Design:
Designed in the iconic city of Turin, Italy, the S07 isn’t just another boxy SUV. Its sleek lines and sculpted shape are inspired by the ‘golden ratio,’ a term more often associated with art and architecture. This design choice gives the SUV an ultra-modern look, enhanced by its frameless, suction doors, hidden handles, and double-glazed windows that eschew Tesla’s drab and ubiquitous look and feel.
The aerodynamic design also contributes to its drag coefficient of just 0.258, reducing energy consumption and cutting down on wind noise for a quieter ride. The result? A vehicle that looks as good as it drives.
Luxury and Comfort Inside:
S07’s cabin reveals a stunning, yacht-inspired wrap-around console that’s both futuristic and inviting. High-quality soft-touch materials, premium synthetic leather seats, and an ambient 64-colour lighting system come together to create a sense of refined luxury.
The front seats are not only heated and ventilated, but also electronically adjustable, with the driver’s seat boasting 6-way power adjustments and lumbar support. Whether you’re on a quick errand or a cross-country trek, the S07 should provide a comfortable and stylish ride for all passengers.

Technology in Brief
DEEPAL didn’t skimp on technology with the S07. The 15.6-inch floating infotainment screen, which rotates to the left or right by 15 degrees, is a centrepiece of the interior. From here, you control everything, from navigation and climate to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s even Intelligent Gesture Recognition Control that lets you manage music, calls, and more with just a wave of your hand.
For the driver, the augmented reality head-up display (HUD) projects crucial information like navigation and speed onto the windshield, meaning you can keep your eyes on the road while staying informed.
And if you’re into immersive sound, the S07’s 14-speaker Sony system delivers 360° surround sound, turning every drive into a private concert. It even has headrest audio for the driver, providing personal notifications and private calls.
Safety:
In addition to looking the business, the DEEPAL S07 has a full suite of passive and active safety features. Driver assistance technologies ensure a smooth and secure driving experience, while regenerative braking helps conserve energy and extend the range.
One innovative feature that stands out is the Human and Pet Detection System. If the vehicle detects a person or pet left unattended inside, it will sound an alert with flashing hazard lights and honking horns, ensuring no one gets left behind.
Exclusive Scenario Modes: Comfort for Every Occasion
The DEEPAL S07 comes equipped with unique scenario modes designed for all sorts of driving situations and lifestyle needs. Here are a few standouts:
- Privacy Mode: Ensures incoming calls stay private by switching audio from the vehicle to your phone.
- Nap Mode: Automatically adjusts the air conditioning, locks the doors, and plays soothing sounds like rain or ocean waves, making the S07 the perfect rest stop on long trips.
- Camping Mode: Keeps the aircon running while you relax inside the parked vehicle, turning off the display after 5 minutes to conserve energy.
- Bonfire Mode: A fun audio-visual integration that simulates the crackle and warmth of a campfire.
- Car Wash Mode: Automatically closes windows, disables the wipers, and locks the charging port to prevent damage during car washes.
Why Deepal S07 is significant
You can register now at www.deepal.au.
Deepal will be imported under the Inchcape umbrella, local importers of Subaru, Peugeot, and until recently, Citroen. Inchcape distributes Deepal over 13 countries, so the relationship goes beyond a single brand in a single market.
Inchcape MD of Distribution is approachable Kiwi, Blair Read. Deepal MD is an Irishman called Cormac Cafolla. The pair joked about the fact that a Kiwi and an Irishman, working for a British company, were introducing a new Chinese car into the Australian market.
If Deepal expands its portfolio, it is reasonable to assume parent company, Changan, may consider Changan Auto (sedan and SUV), Nevo (sedan and SUV), Avatar (luxury SUV and Sedan), and Kaicheng (utes) for the Australian salesrooms.
Following the recent launch of MG’s Cyberster, the Chinese march into the Australian automotive market is turning upscale. Until now, the focus has been on moving lots of budget product for a price, but established brands are being pressed to justify their existence in the face of rising Chinese quality. China is a force to be reckoned with, and Changan is one of many of the brands are state-owned. This allows enormous flexibility when the big boss also runs a country of 1.4 billion people.
Changan also has joint ventures with Ford, Mazda, Suzuki, PSA (peugeot Citroen) and Avatr Technology, which allows leveraging of knowhow and resources.
DEEPAL is setting out to position itself as a mainstream choice for Australian buyers just as Hyundai/Kia did in the 90’s, and Toyota/Honda/Mazda did in the 60’s. The difference is the Chinese brands are doing in a decade what took Japan and Korea over half a century to do.
Pricing is expected to be competitive, but not bargain basement. Deepal is said to be focused on style, tech, and sustainability, and if looks are anything to go by, the 2024 DEEPAL S07 seems ready to deliver on all fronts when it hits the roads in November.
