MG has finally joined the great Australian ute fight with the arrival of its first-ever dual-cab 4×4, the MGU9 — a bold move into a segment dominated by Toyota, Ford and Isuzu. The MGU9 lands in showrooms in three grades — Explore, Explore X and Explore Pro — priced from $52,990 drive-away, and backed by MG’s seven-year warranty.

MG is celebrating with a nationwide Test Drive Event running from 24 October to 9 November, where punters can get hands-on with the new ute. Those who order during the event will score $1,000 off accessories such as tow bars, roof racks, tonneau covers and more. It’s not exactly a Hilux-baiting incentive, but it’s enough to nudge the curious into the driver’s seat.

The MGU9’s cheeky tagline, “A Creature with Comforts,” fits its personality. There’s genuine effort to mix rugged capability with refinement. At the launch event we crossed creeks and climbed rocks, so yes MGU9 can cash the cheques it writes. More importantly, it is handsome despite its oversized grille. It looks far more modern than Hilux, and has fresher than Ranger.

The cabin feels upmarket, with flexible seating and, as with most Chinese cars, a tech-laden environment with ample convenience features. An electric unlocking tailgate, configurable storage, and a decent safety suite make it more than a workhorse — it’s aiming for the dual-purpose sweet spot of weekday practicality and weekend play. Most of the utes sold in Australia are being used other than for tradies and on mining sites so this could well be gold.

MG has also revealed a comprehensive range of factory accessories, produced in partnership with HSP Vehicle Accessories and Thule. From ladder racks and tray systems to 18- and 20-inch sport rims, it’s clear MG is courting the tradie and the lifestyle crowd equally.

CEO Peter Ciao says the ute “embodies MG’s commitment to capability, quality and innovation.” Marketing speak aside, it’s an ambitious first step into one of Australia’s most fiercely competitive markets. Whether it can take on the big guns remains to be seen, but it’s undeniably a milestone for MG’s Australian lineup.

Pricing (Drive-Away):

  • MGU9 Explore – $52,990
  • MGU9 Explore X – $55,990
  • MGU9 Explore Pro – $60,990

Warranty: 7 years, valid when done at MG’s 100+ national dealers.
