Tesla’s updated 2025 Model Y has officially landed, with first Aussie deliveries kicking off last Thursday, a full month ahead of the planned June rollout. It’s leaner, quieter, better looking, and dressed in a sleek new Cyberpunk frock that makes the old model look a bit last decade. Not only that, Tesla learnt lessons from Model 3’s highland makeover whose onlookers needed a keen eye to spot. Model Y has the indicator stalk Model 3 lacks – hoorah!

We promise not to mention Elon, OH DAMN!

The new Model Y RWD and Long Range AWD now start from $58,900 and $68,900 plus on-roads, and yes, the Launch Editions are rolling out as we speak. Tesla’s cheeky move to drop deliveries early caught a few EV nerds by surprise—several buyers were texting their mates from the delivery bay at Alexandria like they’d just won Eurovision.

Tesla is the spiritual home of EV ZEN. It made charging cool, and gliding silently through car parks sexy. Sure, there have been one or two foibles to be fettled, and most car makers have a new model aft 5 years, but the update has given Model Y the chic come-hither look that it was sadly lacking.

So, what’s new?

Visually, the Model Y borrows a few cues from its edgier cousin, the Cybertruck. Luckily it doesn’t come with Cybertruck’s psychotic personality.  2025 Model Y’s meaner front end features a full-width DRL even smarter headlights as well as new tail lights that subtly give a full width glow to the TESLA badging. The whole vibe is more sculpted, less soap bar. There are new colours too, including Glacier Blue and the moody Stealth Grey that Nico said “looks like it’s been painted in existential crisis.”

Inside, Tesla’s gone luxe. The vegan leather is softer, the materials more premium, and the new ambient lighting casts the comforting glow of a posh hotel night-light. There’s a new 8” screen in the back (Netflix for the backseat boys), and the ventilated front seats and power-reclining heated rears mean everyone rides in comfort, even Raffy after leg day, of did he say, “head day?” I wasn’t paying attention.

A new chassis setup, better suspension damping, and improved tyres make for a quieter, smoother ride—Tesla reckons cabin noise is down by 20%, and they’re not wrong. Luke took it for a blast and reckons it’s “like his HiLux on Xanax—still quick, but way more chill.” Max, meanwhile, loved the extra range bump—up to 533km WLTP in the LR AWD—and the minimalist interior, though he still misses a proper speedo and HUD.

In the RWD video review the most noticeable thing as the cabin’s scrumptious ambience.

There’s also Tesla’s Ultra-Wideband phone key tech (ten times faster), improved cabin airflow, new aero wheels, and optional PPF wrap available from the factory. Still no Apple CarPlay, but the Tesla UI has improved considerably. And yes, Autopilot is still included, with optional Enhanced and FSD packages if you’re feeling flush. The auto lane change is a helpful hand on the highway, but the flawless auto parking aid works properly every time. With no humans involved, the steering wheel whizzes about as the Model Y goes back and forth with the accuracy OCD needle-pointer. There is auto direction selection that works when it feels in the mood to, otherwise the screen slider works well. The overhead console has hidden gears as a surprise and delight for those not yet impressed.

If the screen ever breaks you still be able to use emergency gear selection and voice control.

The sound system is excellent and the AWD’s 15+1 speaker set-up is worth a jolly good seeing to. Tesla is obsessed by streaming services, and as everything is an app, the radio app is more akin tp the Spotify ilk.

Tesla has adjusted pricing from time to time but is still considered by many to be the EV yardstick. As near as other brands have come (or overtaken), none has its own charging network. Everything is owned by Tesla, from floor stock, to chargers, to vans with man in white coats, and more patents than Nicola himself.

The Bad:

No CarPlay/Android Auto, and that is just bonkers. No driver’s display/HUD with the excuse that this car is on the way to FSD (full self-drive, something not possibly without ultrasonics and Lidar) is equally mad. The current cars will never be able to have FSD, so why no HUD? The complex UI takes some getting used to and continues to be a source of both mirth and madness.

The Boys’ Quick Takes:

  • Nico: “It’s giving premium, but still very Tesla. The new lighting is lush, but where’s my wireless CarPlay?”
  • Travis: “Hot. Would drive. Just needs a tray on the back and a beer fridge.”
  • Hunter: “Rear screen’s a vibe. I’d move in.”
  • Max: “Love the range. Still feels a bit digital inside, but it’s grown-up Tesla now.”
  • Luke: “Handles great. Feels like a proper upgrade. Quiet AF.”
  • Hunter: “No tesla, your War and Peace UI is not as good as wireless CarPlay”.
  • Charlie: “I drive an early 70’s DS Pallas, but the Model Y as delicious, quiet, and smooth.”

Verdict:
The 2025 Model Y is everything it needed to be—more stylish, more refined, and more liveable. It still won’t please the haters (or Apple loyalists), but with more range, comfort, and polish, this could be the sweet spot for Aussie EV buyers who want tech, looks, and space without the frills of a Euro badge.
