Subaru’s best-selling mid-size SUV has had a glow-up, and trust us, she’s ready for her close-up. Officially open for pre-orders, the sixth-generation Subaru Forester made her Australian debut at the Melbourne Motor Show and showed up serving rugged eco-daddy realness. This is the first Forester in Australia to pair a strong hybrid powertrain with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, giving you better fuel economy without sacrificing the go-anywhere guts Forester fans love.
Think of her as that hot Pilates instructor who also hikes on weekends and recycles properly. Strong. Flexible. Environmentally conscious.
Seven Flavours of Fabulous
Subaru isn’t here to make you choose between sensible and sexy — they’re giving you both. There are seven variants in total: four classic petrol options and three hybrid models, starting from $43,490 (plus on-roads).
The main attraction? Subaru’s new e-Boxer Hybrid, which mates a naturally aspirated 2.5L engine with a punchy 90kW electric motor and a 1.1kWh lithium-ion battery. That may not sound huge on paper, but Subaru says you’ll get more low-end torque, better response, and over 1,000km of range per tank. Not too shabby when you’re halfway to Byron and don’t fancy stopping in Goulburn for a servo pie.
All models come with full-time AWD and a ground clearance of 220mm, which means the hybrid Forester isn’t just a city slicker pretending to be tough. She’ll handle the gravel, the mud, and that unsealed driveway to the AirBnB you definitely didn’t read the reviews for.
Inside: Luxe Cabin Without the Luxe Attitude
Gone is the practical-but-drab interior of Foresters past. The 2025 model embraces modern chic. Depending on the variant, you’ll get a giant 11.6” portrait touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, USB-C charging, and even a 12.3” digital driver display on up-spec hybrid models.
Seats are plush and ergonomically designed for long road trips or endless peak-hour gridlock, and a wireless phone charger and 360° camera system bring things into premium territory. Even the boot’s had a makeover, with an automatic tailgate and extra room for your bags, dogs, tents, and one emotionally needy friend.

Safety That’s Actually Sexy
Subaru continues its reign as the sensible partner we all need. Every model comes with the newest version of EyeSight® Driver Assist, now featuring a wide-angle monocular camera, 360° surround view, and even a system that can stop the car if the driver becomes unresponsive. That’s right — the Forester is now literally looking out for you, honey.
You also get nine airbags, updated pedestrian/cyclist detection, traffic sign recognition, and Subaru Vision Assist with blind spot monitoring, lane change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. There’s even a Driver Monitoring System to check if you’re nodding off — or just dramatically eye-rolling at Siri again.
More Colours Than a Mardi Gras Float
Forget fifty shades of grey. The 2025 Forester lineup now includes some spunky new hues like Daybreak Blue Pearl, River Rock Pearl, and Cashmere Gold Opal. Alongside old favourites like Magnetite Grey and Crystal White, there’s a tone to suit every taste — whether you’re aiming for outback rugged or inner-city glow-up.
The Verdict: A Queer-Friendly Crossover With Grit
The all-new Forester is shaping up to be the SUV version of your all-rounder best friend — the one who camps, composts, knows good wine, and still helps you move house on the weekend. It’s not trying to be a poser or a poser’s poser (looking at you, faux-4WDs with chrome side mirrors), but rather a genuinely capable, confident, and now eco-savvier machine that still fits in at the local drag brunch and the local trailhead.
The Boys and I are getting ready to take it for a spin, but early signs suggest this new-gen Forester is one worth betting your flannel shirt on.
