Range anxiety is officially dead and buried. Volvo just pulled the wraps off the new Electric EX60, and it’s an all-Scandi, all-electric SUV that doesn’t just move the goalposts—it builds the entire stadium. With a stunning best-in-class range of 810km on a single charge, the EX60 is built for those massive road trips from LA to San Francisco or Paris to Amsterdam without the constant, nagging fear of a dead battery. This is something that bugs Australian drivers who claim they want to do road trips (but never actually do them).
This isn’t just a minor upgrade; it’s a total shift in how we think about EVs. Whether you’re commuting across the city or heading into the mountains for the weekend, this SUV is designed to give you the freedom to move without a second thought about where your next charge is coming from. That should slap the doubters up the clacker.
The magic happens under the skin with Volvo’s new SPA3 architecture. This isn’t just a platform; it’s an ethos. By using cell-to-body technology to integrate the battery directly into the chassis structure, Volvo has killed off that nasty weight while increasing structural integrity. They’ve also introduced megacasting to the assembly line, which replaces hundreds of small, heavy, and complex parts with a single, high-precision casting. It’s leaner, meaner, and altogether keener. This simplified manufacturing process isn’t just about speed; it’s about squeezing extra Ks from that 810km range.
Charging is usually the dealbreaker for people on the fence about going electric. Apart from splinters, it gives drivers other pains in the bum, and EVs won’t silence the yobbos until the yobbos can don a flanny and go to Bunnings about 100 times without plugging in. Volvo knows this, which is why the EX60 carries an 800-volt system. If you find a 400kW fast charger (oh, split my sides laughing!), you can add 340km of range in just ten minutes. That’s essentially a coffee break, but good luck finding anything faster than 150kW, at least in backward old Australia. In places where Rupert Murdoch and his cronies haven’t poisoned the wells, you pull in, grab an espresso, check your messages, and you’re back on the road with enough juice for a billion Christmas trees. It turns the “charging stop” into something that feels as quick and painless as a traditional fuel stop. No more long lunches spent staring at a charging post in a car park. We need charging stations with facilities; after all, that’s what you get if you burn dinosaurs. Mind you, climate-destroyers can charge at home while their owners sleep. Swings and roundabouts, darling.
The Volvo EX60 will be revealed on 21 January 2026 and the entire reveal event will be livestreamed HERE.

Then we get to the in-house developed e-motors, which are specifically tuned to balance oomph with storage. This isn’t just a generic motor glued in from a random supplier; it’s a sweet piece of engineering perfection designed to lower the weight and improve the aerodynamics of the EX60. Every bodacious sweep of bodywork and every line of code in the motor controller works to make the trip smoother, faster, quieter, and cheaper.
Software is a huge part of the story. Volvo partnered with Breathe Battery Technologies to use fancy algorithms that manage how the battery handles power in real-time. This means it stays in the “zone” regardless of whether you’re driving through a frosty Swedish winter or a blazing Australian summer. It optimizes energy flow and prevents the battery from overheating, which also significantly extends its lifespan. To put your mind at ease, Volvo is throwing in a 10-year battery warranty. It’s clear they are confident in the hardware and the code running it, providing 10 years of battery security.
Because there are far fewer moving parts in an electric motor compared to a petrol engine, the EX60 doesn’t need to fund another boat for your mechanic. There’s no oil to change, no spark plugs to swap, and far less wear and tear on the drivetrain—and brake pads that will probably outlast mankind. The official reveal is set for 21 January 2026, and you’ll be able to watch the whole thing live. Volvo is proving that choosing an EV doesn’t have to be a dreary dinner argument with that bloke you want to slap. It’s faster than his crappy ute, it goes further, and it charges in the time it takes to finish a latte.
