BMW’s all-electric iX is back with a bit of new jewellery, gym-worthy muscle, and and bags of extra power storage.

Due to sail into Aussie shores in mid-2025, the new iX xDrive45 M Sport replaces the xDrive40 Sport with more power, more range, and just the right amount of M Sport oomph. It’s like BMW finally took the iX out of its eco-retreat and sent it straight to boot camp.

What’s New?

💥 More Power – Now pushing 300kW and 700Nm, the iX xDrive45 drops its 0-100km/h time to 5.1 seconds—a full second quicker than before. That’s properly brisk for something that still looks like a chunky concept car. The looks may not be to everyone’s taste, but the power under the foot is irresistible.

🔋 Better Battery, Bigger Range – A 94.8kWh pack boosts range by 38%, bringing it to 602km (WLTP). If that’s not enough, BMW’s MAX RANGE mode wrings out an extra 25% by shutting down power-hungry features. Say goodbye to seat warmers and hello to ….. never mind, that’s a story for another time.

Faster Charging – DC charging now hits 175kW, getting you from 10-80% in just over half an hour. Maximum charging available is 350kw and very few EVs on the market can cope with it. Kia, Hyundai, and Porsche are among the lucky owners. Even with 175kw, it doesn’t mean that’s what you’ll get 100% of the time.

Not all public charging is the same.

🛞 Refined Ride – BMW tweaked wheel bearings, tyres, and rear axle for better handling and efficiency. Adaptive air suspension and Integral Active Steering are optional, because why not?

Styling Tweaks – The iX still has its love-it-or-hate-it looks, but now the kidney grille glows (because of course it does), and new adaptive LED headlights add extra panache. A suite of fresh colours—including Frozen Deep Grey and Arctic Race Blue—should help distract from the fact that it still resembles a rolling block flats, albeit a hi-tech one.

ABOVE: BMW iX xDrive45 M Sport is Sharper, Faster, with More range

Inside: High-Tech and M Sport Attitude

The M Sport package isn’t just about the bodywork—it’s inside, too.

Expect M multifunction seats, a leather-wrapped M steering wheel, and Dark Silver trim to dial up the sportiness. BMW’s iDrive 8.5 infotainment system sits within the curved display, and a chic Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof is now standard for moody late-night drives.

Final Thoughts

With these little tweaks, a touch more grunt, and extra tech goodies, the iX xDrive45 M Sport could finally win over those still on the fence about electric SUVs. But with stiff competition from the Mercedes EQE SUV, Audi Q8 e-tron, and Tesla’s ever-polarising Model X, will BMW’s big electric bruiser stand out? If Tesla’s psychotic owner keeps up his antics, the Beemer earns extra qudos.

Time (and a proper road trip) will tell.
