BMW Expands Electric Line-Up with New X3 Plug-In Hybrid for 2025
BMW Australia is stepping up its green game in 2025 with the new X3 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid, adding a fresh choice to the popular X3 family and marking the fifth plug-in hybrid model in BMW’s local fleet. This new option joins the existing X3 models – the X3 20 xDrive and the high-performance M50 xDrive – as part of BMW’s efforts to offer 21 electrified vehicles to Australians next year, just in time for the Federal Government’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standards.
This plug-in X3 offers a bit of everything: decent power, an all-electric range of up to 91 km (a jump from its previous version), and a hybrid system aimed at improving overall efficiency. It pairs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a respectable 220kW and 450Nm of torque. While it’s no track star, it’ll handle the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.2 seconds and can reach a top speed of 215 km/h, with EV-only mode maxing out at 140 km/h.
Charging speed has finally been addressed, with the new model able to fully recharge in a little over two hours – a relief compared to its slower predecessor. And BMW has tweaked its energy management system to be a bit savvier; it switches to combustion power just before you hit freeway speeds, saving the battery for slower city traffic.

The X3 30e xDrive also has a refreshed look and an updated interior, with BMW’s latest Operating System 9 and a focus on sustainable materials. Yet, the broader question remains: are Australians ready to embrace hybrids and EVs in numbers large enough to impact BMW’s local sales? With the X3 30e, BMW is clearly betting on it – and hoping that increased choice in the electric range might sway some fence-sitters into the plug-in hybrid camp.
It also has extensive standard specification, with highlights of the new X3 30e xDrive listed below:
