Citroën 19_19 Concept Revealed

Citroen just turned 100, and instead of a boring history book, they built a spaceship. The 19_19 Concept is a rolling middle finger to conventional automotive design, ditching the typical three box shape for something that looks like a helicopter crashed into a lounge room.

The exterior is all about transparency. Citroen claims they wanted an aircraft fuselage feel, using a see-through bubble to give passengers a proper view of the world they are ignoring. To keep things from getting too creepy, they used a blue micro perforated film on the rear. You can see out, but the plebs on the street can’t see in.

The footprint is significant. It spans 4655mm in length and 2240mm in width, standing 1600mm tall. The real story is the 3100mm wheelbase, which is essentially just a giant platform for people to lounge on. It sits on 30 inch wheels, which sounds like a nightmare for ride quality, but Citroen is doubling down on their heritage. They paired these gear cog style rims with narrow 255/30 tyres and an active hydraulic suspension. They call it a magic carpet ride, and they are so confident in it that you can actually see the suspension bits working from inside the cabin.

Inside, the layout is a chaotic mix of furniture styles. There is no symmetry here. The driver gets a standard seat, the front passenger gets a chaise longue with a motorised footrest, and the back is just a sofa. It is a mental detox chamber designed to hide the tech until you actually need it. Instead of screens everywhere, a digital assistant with natural language recognition pops up from the dash. Most of the vital info is thrown onto the windscreen via augmented reality, keeping the dashboard clean.

The powertrain is surprisingly punchy for a lounge room. It uses two electric motors, one for each axle, giving it four wheel drive. You get 340kW of power and 800Nm of torque. That is enough to hit 100km/h in five seconds flat, which is plenty for something that looks like it belongs in a sci-fi flick. Top speed is capped at 200km/h, likely to save the 100kWh battery from draining too fast.

Range is a standout figure at 800km on the WLTP cycle. If you do run out, the 19_19 supports wireless induction charging and fast charging that adds nearly 600km of range in 20 minutes. It also packs Level 4 autonomous tech. When you get bored of driving, the steering wheel and pedals simply retract, letting you focus on the sofa.

This is Citroen proving that the future of travel does not have to be a sterile white box. It is weird, it is fast, and it is aggressively comfortable.
