Could Chargefox App Cover All EV Chargers?

Chargefox Roaming could be an EV Game Changer

Like mobile phones, EV charge roaming is a way to get more use out of something you already have, and that usually means extra cost. Wallets are already stretched so budgets matter.

Chargefox manages EV public charging points, and as we know, perceived difficulty in charging is among the biggest of barriers to the purchase of an EV anywhere in the world. While some countries have blazed a path to full electrification, Australia was manacled to the lost decade of anti-EV campaigning by a highly resistant federal government.

Why is roaming important?

Almost anyone who has charged an EV has been in the position of needing to download app on the spot They must  set up an account and attach a credit card for payment. It often needs confirming, and reconfirming, usually at the most inopportune moment while exposed to the elements. The wind is howling and rain is lashing at the car windows, and you’re in a hurry, but it doesn’t work and you’re stuck.

Chargefox has worked out a deal with NRMA to have more of its sites on the Chargefox app, and is encouraging other suppliers to do the same. Those suppliers could continue to use their own apps, but could also have customers go through the existing Chargefox system at no extra cost.

What are the costs?

The cost depends on the operator of the outlet, and varies widely. Unlike ICE vehicle owners, EV drivers are more limited in their choice. The ability to check the site thoroughly prior to the visit can save time and money. Although the Chargefox app shows availability, location, and cost at each site, you might still encounter the odd hiccup. We have experienced sites go out of service while we were actually using them.

Rates range from 40c to 75c p/kwh but may change at any time and are not regulated.

John Sullivan, CEO of Chargefox, underscored the significance of this development, stating, “Our mission is to make EV charging simple, affordable, and accessible for everyone. Our new roaming capability means drivers can now access NRMA’s charging network alongside our existing alliance of leading charging networks including; The Motoring Clubs of Australia, Engie, WA EV Network, Queensland Electric Super Highway, and Electric Highway Tasmania.”

Benefits of roaming

‍For Charging Networks:‍

  • Reach the 150,000+ drivers who already use Chargefox.
  • Increase charger utilisation and revenue.
  • Retention of operational independence and pricing autonomy.
  • Option to maintain your own apps and user experience alongside integration with Chargefox.

For Drivers:‍

  • Simplified access to chargers via a single platform, reducing the need for multiple apps and accounts.
  • No additional costs with standard pricing regardless of which app you choose.
  • Flexibility to choose preferred charging apps while enjoying a seamless user experience.
  • Better support and affordability through club membership discounts or Chargefox charging subscriptions.

As more brands are added and the Chargefox app covers more outlets, drivers need to search other apps less often. Having a single point through which all charging appears is a great idea.
