BMW Ix Pace Car at Melbourne Marathon Festival
Competitors in this past weekend’s Melbourne Marathon Festival had the first-ever, fully emissions-free, BMW iX as the pace car leading the 42.195-kilometre course.
The iX goes on sale in Australia this month, and signals the start of BMW’s partnership with the Melbourne Marathon Festival.
The all-new models BMW iX3, BMW iX, and BMW i4 Gran Coupé will be launched locally and were all available to view.
The BMW iX electric pace car brings back memories of the1972 Olympic Games in Munich, when BMW 1602 Electric prototype was the support vehicle for the marathon.
The 1602 Electric had a 32kW DC shunt-wound motor whose power came from 12 standard 12-volt lead-acid batteries positioned on a pallet in the engine bay.

Way back then, the 1602 Electric 0- 50km/h took a massive eight seconds and a top speed of 100km/h. The 30 kilometres range seems trifling in the days now of 500 kilometres on a single charge.
To put that in to perspective, iX in xDrive40 puts out 240kW/630Nm and has a 0-100km/h of 6.1-seconds. Its range is 420km with power coming from the latest generation 77kWh lithium-ion battery.
BMW iX xDrive50 has even more power, with and output of 385kW/765Nm and a range of 620km from its 112kWh battery. To top it all off, the 0-100 kph dash is over in 4.6-seconds.
Fast charging can add 150 kilometres of range in 10 minutes on the iX xDrive50 and 95 kilometres on the iX xDrive40.
BMW iX has an interior highlighted by a new BMW Curved Display and the latest-generation iDrive system.
Sustainability is the key aim of BMW iX, so green power to manufacture various components including batteries. Finally, BMW has avoided using rare earth materials in the electric drive systems.
