Ferrari has taken the roof off and dialled everything else up to 11. Say hello to the ferocious 296 Speciale A – the wildest rear-wheel-drive spider ever to wear the Prancing Horse badge.

This isn’t just a topless 296 GTS. The 296 Speciale A is a thoroughbred evolution, combining Formula 1-derived tech, aerodynamic trickery, and hybrid muscle with a shot of old-school drama. With 880 horsepower on tap, a record-breaking power-to-weight ratio, and enough carbon fibre to make an aircraft blush, this plug-in hybrid rocket redefines open-air driving.

Power: Electrified and Uncompromising

Under the sculpted engine cover lies Ferrari’s 120° V6 twin-turbo, now massaged to deliver 700 cv—up 37 hp from the GTS—thanks to lightweight titanium conrods, a redesigned crankshaft, and even an F1-style knock control system. Pair it with a 180 cv electric motor and total output hits 880 cv (approx. 648 kW), making it the most powerful rear-drive Ferrari spider ever built.

The electric motor now delivers more torque in key moments, thanks to a new “Extra Boost” mode drawn from Ferrari’s experience in the Le Mans-winning 499P. From 0 to hair-raising in milliseconds, this isn’t just hybrid—it’s hybrid done the Ferrari way.

Race-Bred Chassis and Aero Magic

Aerodynamics take centre stage. With a whopping 435 kg of downforce at 250 km/h, the 296 Speciale A produces 20% more than the GTS. Ferrari has added new vertical fins, a revised front dam, underbody tuning, and a three-position active spoiler that now includes a Medium Downforce (MD) setting for that sweet spot between grip and drag.

Braking precision is enhanced by ABS Evo, while revised dampers and stiffer springs reduce roll by 13% and sharpen handling even further. Weight-saving measures include extensive use of carbon fibre and titanium (including a full titanium exhaust option), resulting in a record power-to-weight ratio of 1.69 kg/cv.

Design: Functional Seduction

The 296 Speciale A doesn’t scream, it smoulders. Aggressive fins, ductwork and spoilers are all functional, but they also turn heads. The carbon-fibre engine cover features exposed elements for cooling and theatre, while unique livery options—including painted tricolour stripes and forged wheels—add bespoke flair.

Cabin: Minimalist, Focused, Fast

Inside, Ferrari has kept things businesslike. There’s no excessive digital clutter—just lightweight trim, race-inspired seats, and tactile switchgear. The Retractable Hard Top (RHT) opens or closes in 14 seconds at speeds up to 45 km/h, turning the Speciale A from wind-in-your-hair missile to hardtop predator in seconds.

The Drive: Electrifying, Literally

While drive impressions are yet to be fully revealed, Ferrari promises a sharper, faster, and more emotive experience than the already-impressive 296 GTS. Gear shifts from the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission are quicker, thanks to the electric torque fill, and the V6 still delivers the spine-tingling howl Ferrari engineers worked so hard to create.

It’s track-capable, yet road-tameable. A duality few cars manage, and fewer still perfect.

Conclusion: Topless and Peerless

The Ferrari 296 Speciale A is a masterpiece of engineering and emotion—track-focused, brutally fast, and yet refined enough to drop its roof and cruise the Riviera. It blends cutting-edge hybrid tech with traditional Ferrari flair, delivering a driving experience that’s both future-forward and unmistakably Italian.

No price has been announced, but with production likely to be limited and allocation even more exclusive, it’s safe to say the 296 Speciale A will be the stuff of dreams—and collectors’ wishlists.
