FitcamX OEM Dashcam – Is it Worth the Money

FitcamX is a Chinese electronics retailer whose products, manufactured by ‎Dongguan Daozhi Electronic Technology Co., Ltd, include OEM-like dashcams.

Most dashcams are a hangover from the days of add-on navigation systems. They developed into dual units with cameras facing forward, to stand alone units the suction-cup to the windscreen, all drawing power from the 12v outlet. This is the best unit for beginners for owners using the same camera for multiple vehicles. The best examples are fully featured and have high quality lenses and electronics with some also having rear cameras.

A recent development is the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) style dashcam. They usually take the form of a covered extension that sits alongside the cowling for the automatic windscreen wiper sensor and AEB camera. FitcamX takes an even bolder leap, replacing the cowl completely. This remanufactured part contains the camera, and fits neatly round existing electronics. Thus, whatever the vehicle, it must have power sensors in order that the camera can tap into it.

Once this OEM style dashcam is installed, it is invisible unless you know where to look.

Removing the original plastic cover is done using the accompanying plastic removal tool shaped like a crowbar. Our test unit for a post 2020 Toyota Supra, is split in 2 parts allowing the rearview mirror to pass through the centre of the cover.

The new cover is connected to the rain sensor power supply with a cable supplied. Other installation and fittings can be seen HERE on the FitcamX site.

The parts look to be of good quality though this is no indication of performance. The packaging likewise. FitcamX also claims to have after sales support customers can rely on. Users report the support centre has been helpful.

Review:

We have yet to install the camera and complete our review. We have found a host willing to allow this to be fitted to her Supra and will back shortly with the news, good and bad. There are no reviews for the Supra dashcam, but there are users comments on other models.

If it works as promised, it is well worth the money.
