Geely’s Starray EM-i has officially set a Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption on the Sydney–Melbourne coastal drive. Covering 1,056 km, it averaged just 3.83 L/100km—well below its official 4.4 L/100 km rating. And yes, this was real roads, real traffic, rolling hills, and summer heat, not some closed-track stunt.

The plug-in hybrid uses a 1.5L petrol engine, 11-in-1 E-Drive System, and a 29.8 kWh battery, letting it swap seamlessly between electric, petrol, and hybrid modes. Its EM-i Super Hybrid system combines intelligent energy management with efficient aerodynamics to maximise range and minimise consumption.

Dong Wan from Geely’s Research Institute said the route was chosen to reflect everyday driving conditions. “We didn’t want just a record—we wanted to see how it performs in real life,” he said. And the Starray EM-i delivered, gliding through urban congestion, coastal plains, and undulating hills without breaking a sweat.

Since launch, it has sold 114,185 units globally and is available in Australia, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, and Indonesia. The record confirms what Australians can already see on the roads: hybrids can be practical, efficient, and capable in real-world conditions.
