GWM Hires Aussie Engineering Legend Rob Trubiani for Local Tuning

In a move that’s bound to make petrolheads sit up and take notice, GWM has just secured one of Australia’s top engineering talents to fine-tune its vehicles for local roads. The Chinese brand, which has been climbing the sales charts Down Under, has appointed Rob Trubiani as its new Product Engineering Manager. And if that name rings a bell, it should—he’s the bloke who spent nearly 15 years as Holden’s lead engineer for vehicle dynamics, fine-tuning some of the most beloved Aussie cars ever built.

Trubiani isn’t just any engineer; he’s a ride and handling guru with nearly 25 years of experience tweaking cars to perform at their best. From braking systems to chassis refinement, he’s done it all. His deep understanding of Australian and New Zealand road conditions has made him one of the most respected figures in the industry. Most recently, he lent his expertise to global engineering consultancy Segula Technologies, but now, he’s bringing his magic touch to GWM.

This appointment marks a major step forward for GWM, which has been steadily growing its reputation in Australia as a serious player in the competitive SUV and ute market. The brand has been listening to Aussie and Kiwi drivers for years, adjusting its vehicles to better suit local conditions. With Trubiani on board, expect those refinements to go up a notch. Whether it’s taming outback corrugations, ensuring better cornering on twisty mountain passes, or making sure urban runabouts feel dialed in, his job will be to ensure GWM vehicles don’t just compete—they excel.

GWM has already incorporated customer feedback into its latest models, improving ride comfort, handling, and overall driving dynamics. But the addition of Trubiani signals a new era of locally focused engineering, ensuring future models are not just adapted for Australia and New Zealand but genuinely tailored to our unique driving environment.

“We are delighted to have secured Rob as our new Product Engineering Manager,” said Steve Maciver, GWM’s Head of Marketing & Communications. “With a wealth of local ride and handling experience, we’re confident that Rob can help deliver an even better in-vehicle experience for our customers.”

With GWM cementing its place in Australia’s top 10 brands, this move signals a serious commitment to local tuning. And given Trubiani’s track record, don’t be surprised if future GWM models start feeling a whole lot more Aussie under the skin. Could this be the turning point that sees GWM become a dominant force on Aussie roads? Time will tell, but with Trubiani in the driver’s seat of the brand’s engineering program, the future looks smoother, sharper, and a lot more exciting.

He officially joins the team in early April—just in time to get his hands dirty and start shaping the next generation of GWM vehicles.
