Australia’s longest established motoring magazine, Wheels, has celebrated its 60th anniversary by naming the best Australian cars of all time – and Holden’s VE Commodore tops the charts.

Cited by Wheels editor Stephen Corby as “a step ahead, in terms of quality and design”, the VE Commodore was the only car in the final shortlist to get unanimous approval from the Wheels judging panel.

“It was always going to be a strong contender,” said Corby, “but in the end it was the only car that every judge voted for.

“It proves that Australia is making the best cars it has ever made, right now. And it’s exciting to think that an even better Commodore [the forthcoming VF] is just around the corner.”

A total of four Holdens made the magazine’s Top 10; the others being the VY Monaro, the HQ and Australia’s first homegrown car, the 48/215, launched in 1948.

“This is a great accolade for Holden’s design, engineering and manufacturing skills,” said Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mike Devereux.

“If the VE is regarded as the best Australian car ever, then I can’t wait to see what the Wheels team make of the new VF Commodore in just a few weeks’ time. It’s a shining example of what our team here in Australia is capable of, and a car that we believe is truly world class.”
