Jaecoo is throwing the cat—or rather, the dog—amongst the pigeons in the Aussie EV market. The J5 EV is landing in January 2026, and they aren’t messing around with a confusing lineup. It’s one highly-specced variant, and if you’re one of the first 1,000 to pull the trigger, you’re looking at $36,990 driveaway with free premium paint.
That’s a punchy price for a battery-electric SUV that looks this rugged. While everyone else is fighting over screen sizes, Jaecoo is pivoting to “fur babies.” The J5 features an antibacterial, silicone-based synthetic leather designed specifically for pet claws and messes. It’s tough, easy to wipe down, and frankly, a no-nonsense addition for anyone who actually uses their SUV for more than a mall run.
Under the floor, you get a 155kW motor driving the front wheels. It’ll hit triple digits in 7.7 seconds, which is plenty of poke for overtaking on the M1. Range is pegged at 402km (WLTP), and the efficiency is decent at 143Wh/km. If you’re low on juice, a DC fast charger gets you from 30% to 80% in about 28 minutes—basically a quick coffee and a stretch.

The kit list is massive. You get 18-inch aero alloys wrapped in Continental rubber, a power tailgate, and V2L (Vehicle-to-Load), meaning you can run your gear off the car’s battery. Inside, there is a 13.2-inch infotainment slab and an 8.88-inch driver cluster. There’s even a remote start that remembers your air-con settings—no more melting in a hot cabin after a day at the beach.
Safety isn’t an afterthought either. Seven airbags, AEB, and Adaptive Cruise are standard. It’s also a global hit already, topping BEV sales in Thailand and racking up 6,000 preorders in Indonesia in a fortnight.
With an 8-year unlimited km warranty and capped-price servicing, Jaecoo is clearly trying to kill off any lingering “new brand” anxiety. It’s honest, it’s well-priced, and it even offers a karaoke machine. If you want a small electric SUV that doesn’t feel like a precious toy, this is it.
