Lexus ambassador and former Formula One world champion Alan Jones has been inducted into the newly formed Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame.
Jones won the world championship for the Williams team in 1980 and clinched 12 Grand Prix victories from 116 starts over an illustrious, decade-long Formula One career.
He was also successful in other motorsport disciplines, winning the 1982 Australian Sports Sedan and GT Championship, 1993 Bathurst 12 Hour, 1995 Winfield Triple Challenge, and posted multiple podium finishes in the Australian Touring Car Championship.
Since finishing his active racing career Jones has been a prominent commentator and now serves as a guest steward at specific Formula One races around the world – a role that sees him provide his knowledge and experience to the permanent stewards when adjudicating on racing incidents.
The Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame (AMSH) is an initiative of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) in collaboration with other associations to honour those who have achieved significant success in motor sport.
Jones, who will attend the inauguration dinner this Saturday on the eve of the 2016 Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne, said he was elated by the accolade.
“I’m honoured and delighted, particularly because it’s the first hall of fame for motor sport in this country,” he said.
“The inauguration dinner will be a great opportunity to be in the same room as so many luminaries from our sport.”
Lexus Australia chief executive Peter McGregor said the luxury marque was proud to be affiliated with Jones.
“We would like to congratulate Alan on this wonderful achievement – a worthy recognition of his significant contribution to motor sport over many years,” he said.
“Lexus greatly values its association with Alan, and both we and our guests appreciate his knowledgeable input to our activities, including launches and drive days.” LEXUS Alan Jones Hall Of Fame gaycarboys (2)
