LC 500 is not a car, it is a symbol, a symbol of a company building a low-volume vehicle to show what it is capable of, for a buyer who has “made it” in life.
The buyer could easily have gone for a run-of-the-mill BMW or Mercedes, both of whom have large, powerful coupés and convertibles in that price range. Then, there are the exotics like Ferrari and McLaren, that are awkward to use daily. So, the question is why a buyer would go for the LEXUS LC 500 instead.
The uber-luxury barn-stormer is somewhat of a dinosaur, and a very handsome one whose class and presence is undeniable.
LC 500 Convertible is a big, lusty, car that is sold as a 2+2, but is really a 2-seater, as seen in our video. LC 500 uses a gorgeous 5.0L all-alloy V8 that needs no turbo to get 351kw and 540Nm power figures. Its world-first 10-speed automatic is a stunner, with shifts that are imperceptible much of the time.
It isn’t until you start to view parts of LC 500 in isolation that you come to really appreciate it, and as I did, fall in love with it all over again.
Apart from the roof, LC 500 convertible is more or less the same as the coupé. Rear seat room suffered somewhat, as that is where the roof is stowed, stealing room from both the rear seats and boot.
Outside:
21” wheels, and a roof that stands only 1.35m off the ground, give the LC 500 Convertible the look of a car we used to draw on our books at school. It is a concept car that made it to production, with all the bells and whistles, and all the slits and curves perform a purpose. The Drag Coefficient 0f .33 for the coupé and .34 in the convertible, isn’t particularly great, but that misses the point.
LC 500 Convertible is meant to impress, and it does that in spades. It is one of the few convertibles to look as good with the roof up as is does when the roof is stowed.
Apart from the delicious looks, there are clever design touches that aren’t obvious at first glance. The boot release is a tony button in the corner of the driver-side tail light. The wipers have inbuilt spray outlets, and the roof is 4 layers thick. Finally, the doorhandles only present themselves when required for use.

ABOVE: 2022 LEXUS LC 500 Convertible Review
Inside:
The 149L boot is bijou in anyone’s language. The fore section is the roof bin and unlike other drop-tops, isn’t available for boot space when the roof is up.
The apart from the reduced rear leg room, the only other change is the flip-up section fore of the armrest that conceals the roof and global window buttons.
The 10.3” infotainment screen, sans touch input, is fettled through the awkward LEXUS touch pad. You can’t use it easily on the move, but it didn’t seem to matter once the V8 was howling.
Mark Levinson has out done himself, so to speak. The audio is clear, crisp, and deeply rich, and comes with CarPlay/Android Auto and DAB+. Unlike BMW, there is no monthly rental charges to use them.
The Climate Concierge manipulates the vents, neck warmer, heated/cooled seats, and heated steering wheel in order to keep the occupants in the front at the temperature desired. Left in automatic mode, the only button you need to change is the temperature lever.
LC 500 Convertible oozes luxury from every pore, with deeply detailed leather covering much of the cabin. It is offset by tasteful metal, and quality plastic. What you see and touch feels of the quality that will outlast time.
Like the metalwork outside, the interior design has a timeless quality that eschews fashion, therefore transcends trends.
It is comfortable too, even with the roof open. Gays love quality right? And the LEXUS is quality from every angle.
The Drive:
If the come-hither looks don’t get you, and the cabin doesn’t float your boat, the drive certainly will.
As stab of the starter causes a heavenly choir to burst into song. Its not a the unsophisticated grunty rumble you get from an American V8, but a reserved high-pitched purr, like a very large but very contented pussy.
The gear leaver is much like the one from Prius and takes a minute to get used to. Right/down is drive, right/up is reverse, and a pull back will get you in to manual as long as you’ve been in drive first. Park is a single button
The roof works at low speeds, giving you time to get the bull boom-shakala as you stalk your way through an underground carpark. You emerge into the sunlight looking like a sun-glassed film star. You’re only a head scarf away from a full-on Audrey Hepburn moment.
Steering isn’t stupidly sharp like the Germans. Instead, it is gentle and co-operative, yet precise and insistent. Drive modes are on large knobs on the one side of the driver’s binnacle, with traction control off, on the other. Don’t touch the latter unless you’ve lost the will to live.
We cruised along highways, freeways, and through twisty B roads. One thing is immediately obvious, and that is LC 500 Convertible is a gentleman’s cruiser, not a track car, and it is all the better for it.
Ride is smooth, but foul weather of late has seen off the properly-kept road surfaces, and pot holes are now a curse to be feared. The LC 500 Convertible crashes over all but the smallest of them. At one point, a fairly small pot hole took a chunk out of the rear alloy without letting the tyre down. I cursed and swore at the ruining of an otherwise joyous mood.
Hurtling down the highway, roof and windows down, is a freedom few will experience, but it is threading through the dappled light of a forest trail that brings a reward worthy of a lotto win.
As the light plays on the soft cabin surfaces, the smells of nature permeate every moment. The damp forest floor, the smells of early autumn, and the sounds of birds, make you feel like you’re part of nature, not merely observing it from a bubble.
LC 500 Convertible is as quiet as a mouse until roused, then she turns into a furious and angry escapee from hell. She spits and rages, and as she changes gears, claps of thunder mark each and every cog.
LC 500 Convertible is not a surgical instrument, even at her angriest. The rear-wheel propulsion is never far from a code-brown moment, so demands care and attention.
I’ve no doubt in the hands of an idiot, the back-end would be untidy. However, with a gentleman of a certain age behind the wheel, LC 500 Convertible is an elegant carriage that conveys its riders in great comfort and luxury.
We couldn’t get better than 13.4L/100k with a very gentle foot. Anything else sucks down the drink like Mrs Slocombe at a Christmas party.
For those who have been in a classic open tourer, rain is a curse. No amount of effort stops the water pouring in, but bad weather presents no problem to the LEXUS. The 4-layer roof allows just enough sound in, but no water, ever. In fact, the biblical storms were so heavy, it was like a solid wall of water with the wipers flailing about like a demented windmill. And still, not so much as a drop penetrated the inner sanctum.
We found the neck warmer to be useless, even at full pelt. Perhaps a shorter pilot might have more luck.
Finally, LEXUS Encore Platinum gives owners the ability to change into another LEXUS, get valet parking, and to have a loaner LEXUS during servicing. Not only that, your chariot will be collected and dropped off when service time arrives.

The only thing missing was a Matrix feature for the LED lights. Otherwise, LEXUS LC 500 Convertible is perfection, and if you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it.
The LEXUS has one thing the Germans (and Brits) don’t have, reliability, and a dealer on every corner.
