Who doesn’t like a bit of rough trade? Oh damnation, I’ve read that press release all wrong! it SHOULD read “Mazda BT-50 gets Rough Terrain Mode”, however I prefer my version. The story is now far less interesting but still worth a read if you’re a bare-chested tradie, rough or not.
LCVs like Mazda BT-50, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara have made utes cool again, and are continually at the top of the pops when it comes to Australian sales charts. Utes apparently have appeal as a go-anywhere tourer or 4WD track companion. Personally, the rough trade is more appealing but that’s enough about me.
The Rough Terrain Mode (aka rough trade mode) is now on all 4×4 model grades and it gives Mazda BT-50’s traction control when off-roading. It is switched on using a button next to the gear shifter to modulate throttle and brake inputs instantaneously when it senses the ute coming off idle. The system will intervene before wheel spin occurs, and will then transfer torque to the wheels with most traction without any delay.
The system works alongside the locking rear differential and Hill Descent Control fitted to add another level of capability. Rough Trade is renowned for being nimble-footed, inventive, and inexhaustible.

The Dual Cab Chassis now has a GT specification that places it above the XTR.
Highlights include:
- LED headlamps
- dual-zone climate control
- 9-inch touchscreen
- leather-bound steering wheel and gear knob
GT adds:
- chrome-finished heated exterior mirrors
- heated front seats
- brown leather seat trim
- remote start function (operable via the key fob)
“Our comprehensively specified GT model grade brings with it a number of welcome extras that provide added comfort and refinement for the driver and occupants, while the ‘blank canvas’ of the cab-chassis opens up endless options for customisation at the rear. Putting the two together gives our customers yet another opportunity to fulfill their favourite pursuits and live the ‘You Do Ute’ philosophy,” commented Vinesh Bhindi, Managing Director of Mazda Australia.
XTR and above can now use accessories such as lights and the audio system after engine shut-off, handy when setting up camp or road trip breaks.
There are other changes too. XS and XT models now have auto relock, already fitted as standard on XTR models and above with advanced keyless entry.
Pricing remains the same except for Mazda BT-50 SP model. The latter increases by $30, something you would expect to be absorbed by the manufacturer.
The final icing on the tradie cake is Mazda BT-50 XT Dual Cab Pickup 4×4 manual and SP Dual Cab Pickup 4×4 auto have driveaway pricing available for ABN holders of $49,990 and $64,670 respectively, as part of the Mazda EOFY Driveaway Event. The offer includes 12 months registration, CPT insurance, stamp duty and other such fees.
