Mercedes-Benz teases new G-Class Cabriolet with real-world tests

Mercedes-Benz has finally unclipped the top button on the ever-iconic G-Class, sending the upcoming G-Class Cabriolet out for its first proper shakedown. And honestly? Seeing a soft-top G-Wagen back in the wild feels a bit like spotting a gay icon stepping out of retirement — refreshed, fabulous, and still capable of climbing a cliff in heels.

After the teaser frenzy, Mercedes has now thrown prototypes into the real world, starting in Austria. Engineers are gathering data while the Cabriolet trots through alpine roads, its open-air promise fluttering behind it like a silk scarf in an updraft. Winter trials in Sweden come next, because nothing says “engineering excellence” like sending a convertible into a blizzard and telling it to behave.

Mercedes insists the new drop-top will deliver that familiar G-Class personality — the tank-like charm, the posh swagger, the sense that you could drive through a hedge maze or a Woolies carpark with equal confidence. More details will drip out in due course, but this special edition is clearly designed to tempt adventure-seekers who want rugged luxury without sacrificing the joy of wind-in-your-hair motoring.

Behind all this is Mercedes-Benz AG: 175,000 employees, a global empire of AMG, Maybach, smart, and G-Class machines, and ambitions that stretch from electric mobility to vehicle software supremacy. In 2024 alone, they shifted around 2.4 million vehicles, and their worldwide production and battery networks continue to grow as part of a sustainability strategy that aims to leave a lighter footprint — even if the cars themselves still have the stance of a brick built for royalty.
