Before the 2026 models roll into showrooms, MG’s having one last electric hurrah. The MG4 Excite 51 is now available from $37,990 driveaway, making it one of the most affordable rear-wheel-drive EVs in the country — and one of the cheekiest.

Since its Australian debut in 2023, the MG4 has quietly (and swiftly) built a cult following. More than 12,000 have found homes here, many with drivers who swore they’d “never buy Chinese” or “never go electric.” Yet here we are — an electric hatch that’s actually fun, affordable, and doesn’t make you look like a suburban eco-warrior.

At just under 4.3 metres long, the MG4 feels agile and balanced, with its rear-drive layout and near 50:50 weight split giving it a sense of purpose you don’t expect at this price. The 51 kWh battery keeps things humming along briskly, offering instant torque and whisper-quiet operation that’s perfect for sneaky late-night runs — whether that’s to the servo to laugh the dinosaur-drinkers or somewhere less respectable.

Inside, there’s a clean and modern cabin with a floating 10.25-inch touchscreen that handles Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MG’s iSMART app integration. It’s simple, user-friendly, and blessedly free of gimmicks. Safety’s well covered too, with a 5-star ANCAP rating, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, and all the usual digital nannies keeping you pointed in roughly the right direction.

MG Motor’s Business Director, Kevin Gannon, says the MG4 “has made electric driving accessible for many Australians,” and for once, that’s not just PR spin. To add a bit of extra juice, buyers who sign before 31 December 2025 will score a year of complimentary charging (up to 1,000 kWh) on the Evie network — one of the largest in the country.

For a car that starts under forty grand, the MG4 Excite 51 punches well above its price tag. It’s zippy, practical, and genuinely enjoyable to drive — the kind of EV that doesn’t lecture you about sustainability while you’re having a good time. Think of it as the electric hatch for people who like their lattes strong and their cars with a bit of personality.
