Nissan Goes Green: Low-CO₂-Emission Steel to Take Centre Stage

In a bid to reduce its carbon footprint, Nissan has announced a major expansion in the use of low-CO₂-emission steel in Japan. By 2025, the company expects to quintuple its use of the eco-friendly material compared to 2023 levels. That’s a significant step towards Nissan’s goal of slashing CO₂ emissions by 30% across the entire product life cycle by 2030, with full carbon neutrality set for 2050.

Given that steel accounts for around 60% of a vehicle’s weight, Nissan’s decision is no small feat. Traditional steel production is a CO₂-heavy process, thanks to iron ore reduction in blast furnaces. Enter green steel—manufactured using low-carbon-reduced iron or electric arc furnaces—to help curb those emissions. The shift to greener production methods is a key component of Nissan’s broader commitment to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of its vehicles from cradle to grave.

Nissan first introduced green steel into its Japanese market vehicles in 2023, working with Kobe Steel’s Kobenable® Steel. Now, it’s bringing in reinforcements: Nippon Steel’s NSCarbolex® Neutral, JFE Steel’s JGreeX®, and POSCO’s carbon reduction allocated steel. These materials cut emissions via a mass-balance approach, ensuring sustainability remains at the heart of Nissan’s operations. This large-scale adoption of sustainable steel underscores the company’s proactive approach to tackling climate change and reshaping automotive production for a cleaner future.

Beyond materials, Nissan is exploring additional sustainability initiatives, including alternative energy sources and more efficient manufacturing techniques. The brand isn’t just dabbling in sustainability—it’s making it a core business strategy. Cleaner cars, greener manufacturing, and a future with fewer emissions? Nissan’s driving straight for it. With these bold initiatives, Nissan is not just following the industry trend but setting new benchmarks for a greener automotive sector.
