Nissan has announced its ambitious plan to use low CO2 emission aluminium parts, made from green or recycled aluminium, into new and current vehicle models starting in (Japanese) fiscal year 2024, going on to make a full transition by 2030.

What is Green Aluminium?

Aluminium makes up approximately 10% of the vehicle weight. The transition to low CO2 Aluminium will play a crucial role in Nissan’s strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve carbon neutrality across the vehicle lifecycle by 2050.

Green aluminium that is produced using renewable, ZERO EMISSIONS electricity, can cut production CO2 by approximately 50%. Adding to this, the use of recycled aluminium can reduce emissions by about 95%. Nissan is already sourcing low CO2 emission aluminium sheets for vehicle panels from Kobe Steel, Ltd. and the UACJ Corporation in Japan. In future, the company plans to extend the use of low CO2 emission aluminium to all aluminium parts globally, further minimising their environmental impact.

ABOVE: Nissan to use green aluminium from 2024

The initiative will begin in earnest in 2027 when all new Nissans will use low CO2 emission aluminium. Meanwhile, existing models will have wheels, chassis parts, axle parts, and harness wires made using green aluminium in Japan, the United States, and Europe. The immediate start means around 20% of newly mined aluminium used in Nissan car parts being replaced with green or recycled aluminium by the end of fiscal year 2024.

Like most carmakers, Nissan is keen to go green which also reduces cost. To be a good corporate citizen, Nissan emphasises sustainability as a fundamental aspect of its business, striving for a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world. The company is committed to accelerating its efforts to foster a sustainable society, aligning with its broader environmental goals. This transition to low CO2 emission aluminium is a significant step in Nissan’s ongoing journey toward sustainability and carbon neutrality.
