Jeep Grand Cherokee Named Australia’s Cheapest Large SUV To Own

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has been named the cheapest large SUV to own, according to a new study by Western Australia’s peak motoring body, the Royal Automotive Club (RAC).

A breakdown of ownership costs incurred in Western Australia covering five years from the date of purchase revealed Jeep’s Grand Cherokee has the lowest costs in its class.

The Grand Cherokee is cheaper to own and operate than the Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol on a cost-per-week basis.

The RAC calculated ownership costs by breaking down each car’s on-road price, trade in value after five years, depreciation, interest, fuel, tyres and servicing costs into a per-kilometre, per-week and per-year charge.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee blitzed the field with the RAC finding it was the only car in its class with a per-km charge of less than one dollar. It’s the third consecutive year the Jeep Grand Cherokee has been crowned cheapest large SUV to own.

The RAC found that, when all costs are tallied, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD paired with its 210kW, 347Nm V6  costs just $0.97c per kilometer to own, compared with Mitsubishi’s $1.02, Toyota’s $1.14 and Nissan’s $1.14.

The study is terrific news for the thousands of Australians who have helped propel Jeep’s Grand Cherokee to the title of best-selling large SUV over the past 12 months (June 2013 to July 2014) with more than 16,700 units sold.

Commenting on the findings, Fiat Chrysler President & CEO Veronica Johns said “It’s another accolade for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, a car we’re incredibly proud of.  Since its launch in 2011, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has received a number of awards for its quality, technology and driving dynamics both on- and off-road. But we’re proud to see it recognised not just as a great car to drive, but as a great car to own. “
