Ryan’s Hyundai N Day Sydney Motorsport Park Pt 1 – Summary

Ryan’s Hyundai N Festival Weekend kciked off at Sydney Motorsport Park – Part 1Summary More stories to follow.

Hyundai hosted its now-annual N Festival at Sydney Motorsport Park, and extended invites to all owners of Hyundai N cars (i30 N [hatch / fastback], i30 Sedan N and i20N), 1500 individuals attended with around 400 N cars from all over the country.

My best friend Ronan and I began our journey down from Queensland on Friday morning, arriving at 7PM local time. As Sunday approached, our level of excitement peaked. We rocked up to the Hyundai N festival at around 11:30am, right as track group one was preparing to do their last session of the weekend. These “Nthusits” had also had the Saturday afternoon to “play” on the track.

Sydney Motorsport Park is an amazing place to host a motoring festival. It is just outside Sydney with little to no residential area within hearing distance.

The track day featured the “main” 4.5KM circuit. This circuit features everything a race track should have: tight turns, long sweeping turns and most importantly for a youth, A STRAIGHT! It is one of the many reasons young boys are both hard-n-expensive to insure.

Our late timeslot meant the “N press area” was a little short of fresh “hella” grippy tyres. We did a little stint on stock street tyres instead

ABOVE: 2023 Hyundai N Festival – Sydney Motorsport Park and Sydney Surrounds, owners groups, owners cars,

We drove a “Special” edition i30 N and i30 Sedan N. The latter is also known as an Elantra N or a Avante N in other markets. It is when driving these cars hard on the track that you can really feel the research and development that went into them. Unless pushed past their physical limits, they handle stunningly, carving up corners with their e-LSD which works hard as you power out of a long sweeper corner. The precise steering is something that more “performance” or “enthusiast” cars should aspire to. More important were the hatch’s bucket seats, SO COMFORTABLE for the track.

SMP activities included; the track, a slide pan, THE IONIQ 5 N, an under-16’s area to practice track driving in a “safe” space, tyre change challenge area, N merchandise stand, food trucks and a space where Nthusiasts could show off their cars.

The stunning IONIQ 5 N’s was a look-only thing.  We weren’t able to drive or sit in them, admiring from afar instead. The sight of them gliding along the track was jaw dropping. To see them flying down the straight and into corner 1 with nothing but a hint of tyre noise, shows what Hyundai’s engineers are capable of with a larger budget. They were truly a next level EV for enthusiasts. Find out more here

For my thoughts on the track experience, stay tuned. Keep a special eye out for the N car that got bent, as well as other exciting bits of gossip.

The slide pan or “drift area”, was unexpected given considering all current production N cars are Front Wheel Drive (FWD). Despite that, many N owners that were well practiced in handbrake turns. They clearly invested time into “borrowing” Maccas trays to slide their mum’s regular i30 as teenagers. Throughout the day, the slide pan was a good attraction/ noise generator. One instance involved a quite concerning metallic sound.

Thanks again to the Hyundai PR team, they’re really the best (especially Guido and Nikki), also massive thanks to Alan for allowing me to take his place in this event. I’ll never forget this experience its truly something special.
