Tesla’s ever-popular Model Y has been awarded Gold at the 2025 Australian Good Design Awards, joining an elite list of projects recognised for excellence in innovation, sustainability, and user experience.

The Awards, now in their 67th year, celebrate design that makes life better — from technology and transport to architecture and social innovation. This year’s theme, “Design for Better,” highlighted the role design plays in building a more inclusive and environmentally sustainable world.

Among hundreds of global entries, Tesla’s Model Y stood out for its refined design, incremental improvements, and cohesive vision. The international judging panel called it “a well thought through re-design of one of the biggest success stories in recent automotive design,” noting enhanced safety, upgraded tech, and subtle styling cues aligning with the angular Cybertruck aesthetic.

“Tesla is clearly a trailblazer in the world of EVs,” the jury commented. “Incredible technology coupled with world-class design and engineering. Smart, innovative, and impactful design at its very best.”

Designed in the United States by Franz von Holzhausen and Lars Moravy, the Model Y continues to set benchmarks for the electric SUV segment. The judges praised its meticulous detailing and focus on marginal gains—small, thoughtful refinements that collectively elevate the vehicle’s form and function.

The Australian Good Design Awards, run by Good Design Australia, remain one of the world’s longest-running design recognition programs. Founded in 1958, the Awards honour projects across 13 disciplines and more than 35 categories, from the built environment to product engineering. Entries are judged by a panel of 80 international experts against three key criteria: Good Design, Design Innovation, and Design Impact.

This year’s ceremony will take place on Friday, 17 October, at Sydney’s International Convention Centre (ICC). More than 1,000 leaders from design, architecture, and business will gather to celebrate design’s power to improve daily life. Gold winners like Tesla’s Model Y will also compete for the Best in Class accolade, the Good Design Award for Sustainability, and the nation’s top honour, the Australian Good Design Award of the Year.

Rachel Wye, Managing Director of Good Design Australia, said 2025 marked a record year for creativity and innovation.

“The standard of entries was the highest we’ve seen,” she said. “These projects show how thoughtful design can drive meaningful change—from how we live and work to how we care for our planet.”

Tesla’s latest accolade underscores its continuing influence on automotive design and its role in mainstreaming electric mobility. With its blend of simplicity, technology, and sustainability, the Model Y embodies what the Awards’ theme set out to celebrate: design that genuinely makes the world better.
