Mazda Australia has had a chequered past when it comes to electric propulsion and after a few false starts, the all-electric CX-6e crossover will join the local lineup in 2026. The model made its debut at the Brussels Motor Show on January 9, and this announcement makes the CX-6e is the second battery-electric model confirmed for Australia in as many months, following the 6e sedan.
Both models comes courtesy of the joint venture with Changan and will be manufactured in China.
According to Mazda, the CX-6e introduces the new “FUTURE + SOUL x MODERN” Kodo design evolution. For most of us it is just marketing speak for “a slightly new look.”
Despite moving to a pure electric platform, Mazda claims it maintains the driver-centric Jinba-ittai feel the brand is known for, but only a drive will confirm that. The medium-sized SUV will be the buyer’s EV choice against ICE-powered CX-5, but in making all Mazdas look the same, the range has a strangely aging look to it.

Mazda says it is aiming to offer an easy transition for buyers looking to switch to an electric drivetrain without losing the brand’s signature aesthetic.
Inside, the CX-6e features a generous 26-inch touchscreen display that sweeps across the dashboard. Technical specs released for overseas markets include a 78kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for a WLTP range of up to 482km. Real life is likely to be closer to 430km based on our previous EV experience.
There is a single 190kW rear-mounted motor, good for a 0-100km/h of 7.9 seconds. Fast DC charging has a MAX rate of 195kW, for an alleged 10-80% top-up in around 24 minutes. In a world where the Koreans and Chinese have 800v architecture for up to 400kw charging, 195kw seems modest. perhaps the price might justify the DC charge rate once released, but Mazda’s range pricing suggests the CX-6e will be at a premium.
Local boss Vinesh Bhindi said the SUV is a major addition to Mazda’s multi-solution strategy, offering a “bold new look alongside the latest tech”. By sourcing from China, Mazda expects to be more price-competitive against rivals like the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7. Full Australian specifications, including local tuning and pricing, will be confirmed closer to the 2026 launch.
