Volkswagen 206TSI 4motion Wagon REVIEW

2021 Volkswagen Passat 206TSI R-Line

Volkswagen 206TSi 4motion Wagon REVIEW

You have 2 chances of not loving this little darling, Buckley’s and Nun. Passat Wagon is a cracker from start to finish. It drips with luxury and comfort, and despite its fulsome performance, is a pussycat lying on a mink throw. Passat 206TSI is a big, long-legged GT, with the convenience of a wagon.

This wonderful wagon tops the Passat Pile, with All-Track topping the pile next door, the cheaper, outdoorsy, butch, weekend warrior one. In truth, there is but a few inches between them.

206TFSi, as the name suggests, has 206kw. The All-Track has a decent 162kw, and is taller, with slightly off-roading aspirations.

The Passat 206TFSI, on the other hand, has been lavished with all manner of gadgets, leather, metal trim, and a killer sound system.

Sadly, the mid-to-large passenger car market is now on life support, with fewer and fewer buyers preferring a passenger car to an SUV.

The outside:

Our upcoming video was filmed on a particularly inclement day. Sydney’s weather has been on shuffle for some time, and as the drizzle turned to a steady flow, you could see the headlight’s individual LED cells reflecting through the slightly grubby lense. These are manipulated by the mad scientist under the dash, to ensure no oncoming motorist is dazzled by our high beam. In automatic mode, there is no high beam as such, only bright, and even brighter. Matrix lights are a thing to behold.

Equally classy are the fiendishly evil 19” alloys, wearing an eerie coat of grey.

It would be remiss of me to omit reference to the beauteousness of the rear end. It is a wagon, and does wagon things. A big, dog-friendly hatch is just the right height off the ground. The tail lights are a series of tastefully arranged LED displays. One long slash outlines 3 smaller L-shaped arrangements. They are mirrored across the bottom, and switch between tail light, and brake light. Watch our video to see this dance.

The handsome wagon is strong, yet refined and understated.

The Cabin:

The back doors are enormous, giving those in the rear, generous access to an equally copious interior. Passat 206TFSI has a retractable net between the cargo area and the back seats, and a second retractable cover for your secret shopping business. There is a full size alloy under the cargo floor, which gains huge extra marks..

Then, there is the front.

The design is impeccable. The cabin is festooned in acres of gently-massaged cow, and front seats are heated and cooled, with the mysteriously named “ergocomfort” electric seat control. You can set and store your preferences in case someone messes things up.

Drivers have a digital display, and huge touch screen to fettle settings. There is the usual suite of driver aids and safety gear deep in its bowels, but it is the wireless Apple Carplay/Android auto that will change your life forever.

The ambience is one of an elegant club, designed in the Deco Style. It is quiet and calm, and a place of reflection.

Switch gear is common across the VW group, which means quality of the German kind, which rather perversely, works like a Swiss watch.

My only reservation is a large block of poly-styrene under the driver’s pew which got caught in the strap of my satchel. that is completely ugly and has no place in the cabin. if it has to be there, why not have a plakky cover?

The Drive:

If 206kw sounds a trifle demure for a chariot that weighs 1681kg, but I’ll have none of it. You can tow 2000kg if you must, but leave that nonsense at home and enjoy yourself a bit.

Drive modes include one the driver can tailor to his whim. Not only does the AWD system allow this big lassie to dance over troublesome tarmac, but moist surfaces worry her not. There are no ludicrous off-road aspirations here, it is all aimed squarely at the horizon, and the inky black ribbon that meets it.

From the out, Passat 206TFSI is class personified. Steering is light, yet precise.

Unlike the brand-new VW generations, Passat 206TFSI has not yet sacrificed the centre console and stack on the altar of minimalism.

There are touch buttons for climate, thank the lord. You can get the things you change often without needing big hugs every five minutes.

The suspension is soft and luxurious, while keeping a reserved personality. It gets all frisky once the sport mode is requested with app Passat models have adaptive suspension.

Cornering is sublime, and city streets are handled with aplomb, but the open road is where it wants to be.

The DSG automatic has 6 gears, one or two short of what a car costing this many shekels should have.

OK, you’ve merged onto the freeway enroute to your appointment with destiny, so it is time to deploy the secret weapon, IQ drive.

Smart cruise will take care of most of the hard work, but a press of the IQ drive button, and Passat 206TFSI becomes a self-guided cruiser. It gets cranky if you take your hands off the wheel, even if you don’t take your hands off the wheel, so don’t take your hands off the wheel.

The ride is nothing short of spectacular.

Conclusion:

There is much to love, and little to loathe. Passat is dressed to impress, understated from top to bottom. Performance is swift yet gentle, and transports occupants in regal splendour. Even in the most appalling road conditions, Passat doesn’t put a well-manicured foot wrong.

IQ Drive takes care of the big stuff. Finally, where you get where you’re going, the automated parking will pick up where IQ Drive left off.
